1. Programs and Services Available to Student Associates

You signaled your commitment to a healthcare management career by joining ACHE. Now act on that commitment by taking advantage of the programs and services available to you as a Student Associate. To view a complete list of resources, click on the “Special Interest Areas” section on the left menu of ache.org and go to Healthcare Management Students. You will find links to all the programs and services ACHE provides for students, including scholarships and awards, the Directory of Fellowships in Health Services Administration and career services.

2. Connect With ACHE Affiliates for Experiences Beyond the Classroom

We know you are looking for experiences beyond the classroom—real-world exposure to current healthcare management issues and networking opportunities. To help you bridge the gap between academia and the healthcare management workplace, use the following strategies:

  • Invite your local ACHE chapter leaders to your school or on-campus organization function. Go to the online Chapter Directory to find contact information for your local chapter.
  • Ask your ACHE Regent or a member of the Regent’s Advisory Council to visit your school. Contact information for Regents is available in the Leadership section of the About ACHE area of ache.org.
3. ACHE Higher Education Network

The new ACHE Higher Education Network is off to a strong start. The network began on August 1, 2006, striving to build stronger relationships between ACHE and healthcare management programs, as well as between students and local ACHE chapters. Please visit the ACHE Higher Education Network area for more details. Also, visit the ACHE Higher Education Network directory to find out if your program is a participant.

4. Use Resources Available on ache.org in Your Course Work

Do you need help finding information or ideas for a project or thesis? ACHE’s award-winning Web site features a variety of resources, including:

5. 2007 ACHE Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Management

The ACHE Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Management encourages future healthcare executives to explore important issues in healthcare management. The competition is for graduate and undergraduate students. Top winners in the graduate and undergraduate categories will receive $3,000; their programs will receive $1,000. Second- and third-place winners in each category will receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The six finalists will be invited to attend the 2007 Congress on Healthcare Leadership as guests of ACHE. Entries must be received at ACHE by December 8, 2006. For more information, visit the Healthcare Management Students area of ache.org.

6. Congress Program Assistant Information

ACHE is looking for program assistants for the 2007 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, which will be held March 19-22 in New Orleans. If you are an ACHE Student Associate, you may be eligible to apply for a program assistantship. Program assistants will work four, two-hour blocks at Congress seminars and events in exchange for a refund of the student registration fee.

To apply for a program assistantship, you must complete an online application, which will be available in the Education area of ache.org beginning in late November. Please note that you must be registered for Congress to apply for a program assistantship. You may register for Congress before submitting your program assistant application or as part of the program assistant application process. The Congress brochure and registration information will be mailed to all Student Associates in November.

ACHE offers a limited number of program assistant positions and available slots fill quickly. Therefore, you are encouraged to apply early. In addition, ACHE reserves the right to limit the number of assignments from any individual program to ensure equity. For more information, please contact Meryl J. George, postgraduate fellow, at (312) 424-9308 or mgeorge@ache.org.
