1. Welcome Back!

We are excited about working with ACHE’s more than 3,600 Student Associates this year! Start the school year by visiting the updated Students area which includes our Directory of Fellowships in Health Services Administration, as well as information about scholarships, awards and networking. You can access this section from the ache.org home page by clicking on “Special Interest Areas” from the left navigation bar, and choosing “Healthcare Management Students.”

2. ACHE Higher Education Network

Over the summer ACHE has been working hard to implement the new ACHE Higher Education Network in order to provide students with a valuable on-campus experience. The ACHE Higher Education Network strives to build stronger relationships between ACHE and program directors of healthcare management programs, including relationships with local ACHE chapters. Please visit the ACHE Higher Education Network area for more details. Also, visit the ACHE Higher Education Network directory to find out if your program is participating.

3. Invite a Regent or Chapter Leader to Visit Your Program

Whether or not your program is participating in the ACHE Higher Education Network, you are encouraged to work with your program director or faculty advisor to invite the ACHE Regent representing your area to speak at one of your student organization’s meetings or programs.

Regents are eager to share their experiences in the healthcare field and discuss local healthcare issues. In addition to promoting the benefits of membership and advancement in ACHE, Regents can provide information on the ACHE Higher Education Network and other services ACHE provides. Go to the Leadership Section to find the Regent for your area.

Inviting members of your local ACHE chapter is another way to gain access to professionals in the healthcare management field. Consider contacting your local ACHE chapter to identify members that may be willing to speak to your organization or participate in your programs. Browse the Chapter Directory to locate the chapter in your area.

4. Win up to $3,000 and a Free Trip to Congress in the ACHE Essay Competition

ACHE is pleased to announce the 2007 ACHE Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Administration. The competition is open to active ACHE affiliates who are enrolled in U.S. or Canadian undergraduate or graduate healthcare administration programs that are participants in the ACHE Higher Education Network. The competition encourages future healthcare executives to explore important issues in healthcare management.

First-place winners in the undergraduate and graduate categories will each be awarded $3,000; their academic programs will receive $1,000. Second- and third-place winners in each category will receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The six finalists also will be invited to attend the 2007 Congress on Healthcare Leadership as guests of ACHE. Awards will be presented at the Leon I. Gintzig Commemorative Lecture and Luncheon on March 21, 2007. To recognize all entrants, ACHE will award an executive pen set to each student whose essay is submitted by his or her program director.

ACHE must receive essay submissions by December 8, 2006. For more information, contact Reed L. Morton, PhD, FACHE, associate director, Division of Research, at rmorton@ache.org or (312) 424-9444.
