About the author: J. Stuart Showalter, JD, MFS, has dealt with health law issues for 35 years. After nearly 10 years as a Navy JAG officer (with tours as in-house hospital counsel, malpractice claims attorney, and counsel to the Navy Surgeon General), he served as vice president and in-house counsel to the Catholic Health Association of the United States. He then was partner in a law firm in St. Louis, Missouri, before becoming director of compliance and corporate ethics for an eight-hospital system in Orlando, Florida. He has taught health law at Washington University, St. Louis University, and the University of Central Florida. He retired in 2006 and now works full time as an author and pundit.
