NAMED ACHE’S
‘YOUNG HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR’
CHICAGO,
January 3, 2005—Chip Holmes, CHE, administrator
of Littleton (NH) Regional Hospital, has won the American
College of Healthcare Executives 2005 Robert S. Hudgens Memorial
Award for young healthcare executive of the year. Holmes will
receive the award on Monday, March 14, 2005, at the Parker
B. Francis Distinguished Lecture during ACHE’s 48th
Congress on Healthcare Management in Chicago.
The Hudgens
Award is presented annually to an exceptional healthcare executive
who is less than 40 years old and who is the chief executive
officer or chief operating officer of a health services organization.
The award was established in 1969 by the Alumni/ae Association
of the Department of Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth
University, Richmond, in tribute to its former course director
and ACHE’s first vice president, Robert S. Hudgens,
FACHE.
Holmes
was selected from among healthcare executives who were nominated
for the award by their professional colleagues. The Hudgens
Memorial Award Committee selected the winner based on demonstrated
leadership, administrative ability, motivation, attitude,
innovation, and creativity.
Since
2001, Holmes has served as administrator of Littleton Regional
Hospital, a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital managed by Quorum
Health Resources, Inc. Critical Access Hospitals are designed
to improve rural healthcare access and reduce hospital closures.
CAHs provide essential services to a community and are certified
to receive cost-based reimbursement from Medicare, which strengthens
their financial position within the community.
Prior
to joining Littleton, Holmes was chief operating officer of
Abilene (TX) Regional Medical Center and vice president for
Operations at Abilene Physicians Group. He served as chief
executive officer for Richmond (VA) Eye & Ear Hospital
from 1996 to 1998. From 1994 to 1996, he held a variety of
positions with the Richmond, VA-based Charter Behavioral Health
System, including administrative director and assistant administrator
of Charter Westbrook Hospital and Charter Charlottesville
Hospital.
Holmes
is chairman of the Rural Health Coalition of the New Hampshire
Hospital Association, established to promote and protect health
policy development that benefits rural healthcare in New Hampshire.
He is also a member of the Littleton, New Hampshire Model
Community Board, which was established by a federal grant
to identify and eliminate physical and social barriers for
seniors and people with disabilities. In addition, Holmes
is board chairman for the North Country United Way and a member
the North Country of New Hampshire Transportation Committee.
He is a former president of the West Texas Healthcare Executive
Group and served as a trustee for the Abilene Regional Mental
Health & Mental Retardation Center.
Board
certified in healthcare management and an ACHE Diplomate,
Holmes received his master’s degree in healthcare administration
from Tulane University in New Orleans and his bachelor’s
degree in economics and sociology from Union College, NY.
