NAMED ACHE'S BOOK OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO, February 17, 2003—Wendy Leebov, Ed.D., and Gail Scott are the winners of the American College of Healthcare Executives 2003 James A. Hamilton book of the year award for The Indispensable Health Care Manager: Success Strategies for a Changing Environment.

The award will be presented on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the Malcolm T. MacEachern Memorial Lecture and Luncheon during the American College of Healthcare Executives 46th Congress on Healthcare Management at the Hilton Chicago.

The award is given annually to the author(s) of a management or healthcare book judged outstanding by ACHE's Book of the Year Committee.

The James A. Hamilton Award is underwritten by the Alumni Association of the Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in honor of the late James A. Hamilton, FACHE, the program's founder and course director between 1946 and 1966, and ACHE's 1939-1940 Chairman.

Published by Jossey-Bass, The Indispensable Health Care Manager offers healthcare managers information and tools needed to excel in the diverse roles required of them. The authors use real-life situations and illustrative examples to describe 10 mindset or role shifts that are critical to success in the healthcare management field. These role shifts include moving from provider orientation to customer obsession; from directing to coaching; and from status quo to courage, risk, and change. Using their extensive experience working with healthcare managers in a wide variety of settings, Leebov and Scott provide self-assessment devices for helping managers determine how they can benefit from a particular role shift, as well as tools for making the shift.

Leebov has an independent consulting practice based in Rydal, PA. She is also an associate of Sage Consulting in Novato, CA. Gail Scott is president of Gail Scott & Associates, a healthcare consulting group in Meadowbrook, PA; she serves as seminar faculty for several ACHE programs.
