JACK O. BOVENDER, Jr., FACHE, ELECTED TO AMERICAN COLLEGE OF HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVES BOARD OF GOVERNORS

CHICAGO, March 15, 2003—Jack O. Bovender, Jr., FACHE, chairman and chief executive officer of HCA in Nashville, TN, has been elected to serve on the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of nearly 30,000 healthcare executives.

Bovender took office today at the Council of Regents meeting during ACHE's 46th Congress on Healthcare Management at the Hilton Chicago. He will serve a one-year term representing ACHE affiliates on ACHE's Board of Governors, the authority that oversees ACHE operations and member services.

Bovender has been chairman and chief executive officer of HCA since 2002. From 1985 to 1992, he held several senior-level positions with HCA, including division vice president in HCA's Atlanta Division and president of HCA's Eastern Group Operations. In 1992, he was named executive vice president and chief operating officer for HCA, a position he held until HCA's merger with Columbia in 1994. From 1994 to 1997, Bovender served on the boards of several public and private organizations, including Quorum Health Group, Inc., American Retirement Corp., and Nashville Electric Service. In 1997 he returned to HCA as president and chief operating officer, a position he held until being named president and chief executive officer in 2001. Before joining HCA, Bovender served as a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Service Corps at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, and as assistant administrator at Community General Hospital, Thomasville, NC. In his early career with HCA, he held positions as chief executive officer of Medical Center Hospital in Largo, FL, and West Florida Regional Medical Center in Pensacola.

Prior to being elected an ACHE Governor, Bovender was serving as an Interim Governor. He serves on the boards of directors of the Nashville Community Foundation, Frist Foundation, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and the Center for Non-Profit Management. His past board service includes leadership positions with the Nashville Health Care Council, American Hospital Association, Federation of American Healthcare Systems, and the Florida League of Hospitals. In addition, Bovender is a member of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business's Board of Visitors, a member emeritus of Duke University Divinity School's Board of Visitors, and a member of the executive committee of the Duke University Annual Fund.

Board certified in healthcare management and an ACHE Fellow, Bovender received his master's degree in hospital administration and his bachelor's degree in psychology from Duke University in Durham, NC.
