Historically, informatics was considered as a technology for automating clinical decision making and processes. This book views informatics as a transforming technology, one that alters the structure of clinical processes and broader health organizations. It explores the use of health information technology from a systems perspective. The traditional three-pronged informatics model—cellular, clinical, and population—is expanded to include dynamic systems, which adds to and alters previous conceptions.
This text integrates the medical, nursing, and healthcare IT professions. Its primary audience is graduate and professional students.
Fifteen evidenced-based cases are used through the text to illustrate each chapter’s concepts. Each chapter includes learning objectives, presents key concepts, and discussion questions.

Gordon D. Brown, PhD, is professor emeritus and for 28 years was chairman of the department of health management and informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri. He served as Scientist, World Health Organization, Division of Epidemiology and Communications Science developing integrative models for health systems and has consulted in numerous counties on health system development and global health systems. He was Chairman of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration* and is a recipient of the Association of University Program in Health Administration Filerman Prize for Educational Innovation. He was a founding director and faculty member of the National Center for Managed Health Care Administration and author of numerous articles and books, including Strategic Management of Information Systems in Healthcare. He has held faculty appointments at the Pennsylvania State University and the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. He has a MHA and PhD from the University of Iowa. |
Timothy B. Patrick is Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Health Informatics and Administration, College of Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Patrick received a MS in Computer Science and PhD in Philosophy/Logic followed by post-doctoral studies in Medical Informatics through a National Library of Medicine Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His research includes metadata schema for representing questions and answers, measurements of the quality of translation of evidence into practice, readability of healthcare information for laypersons, and ontology mapping. |
Kalyan S. Pasupathy, PhD, is an assistant professor in health management and informatics at the University of Missouri's School of Medicine. He has a PhD in Industrial & Systems Engineering, and his research involves modeling systems for performance measurement and process improvement, using optimization-based and non-parametric models to discover patterns in large data sets. He has several articles and a book chapter published in this area. His work has been commended, notably receiving the Goodeve Medal from the Operations Research Society. |
