ACHE CEO Dolan to Retire in May 2013

CHICAGO, June 27, 2012—Thomas C. Dolan, PhD, FACHE, CAE, president and chief executive officer of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), has announced his intention to retire effective May 10, 2013, at which time he will become president emeritus. Dolan, 64, began at ACHE in 1986 and was appointed president and CEO in 1991. Dolan has led ACHE as CEO for 21 years, through some of its most prosperous and successful times. During his tenure, ACHE experienced unprecedented membership growth, resulting in more than 40,000 members throughout the United States and 73 countries.

Dolan has been instrumental in establishing ACHE as the nation’s premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery. Not only has the membership and visibility of ACHE grown significantly under Dolan’s leadership, but its certification has come to be recognized as the leading credential for hospital and healthcare system executives. Also, under his leadership, ACHE developed 81 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and overseas, which provide greater services to its members at a local level.

With this announcement, ACHE will begin a search for a successor, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption to ACHE’s members. ACHE anticipates completing the recruitment process by February 2013.

“ACHE was a successful association before Tom's arrival, but his leadership and vision have taken us to new heights,” said Gayle L. Capozzalo, FACHE, ACHE Board Chair and executive vice president, Strategy & System Development of Yale New Haven Health System in New Haven, Conn. “He elevated the visibility and credibility of ACHE in the profession of healthcare management and has become the face of ACHE. Tom is known for his integrity, his unique vision and his organizational effectiveness and is truly a leader in the healthcare management profession.”

Dolan has participated in numerous national associations and committees and chaired the boards of the American Society of Association Executives, Association Forum of Chicagoland, Association of University Programs in Health Administration, Institute for Diversity in Health Management and the Board of Overseers of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has also been active internationally. He is serving the second year of a two-year term as President of the International Hospital Federation.

“One of the greatest privileges of my life has been to serve as president and chief executive officer of the American College of Healthcare Executives,” said Dolan. “It has been an honor to serve its elected leaders, members and staff. I am looking forward, in the future, to spending more time with my family and friends, serving as an executive coach and consultant, and pursuing long neglected hobbies.”
