Donald A. Avery, FACHE, is president/CEO at Hughston Orthopedic in Columbus, Ga.

Avery was named president/CEO at Hughston Orthopedic in 2004. Hughston Orthopedic, which was voted one of the top places to work in Georgia in 2007, is part of HCA and performs nearly 7,000 surgeries annually with a $200 million operating budget. Avery is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hospital and medical staff.
Prior to this, Avery was senior vice president of Physician and Ambulatory Care for the Columbus (Ga.) Regional Healthcare System, from 2000 to 2004, where his responsibilities included negotiating physician contracts. He also served South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta, as vice president for Operations from 1988 to 2000. His previous roles included serving Baptist Medical Center, Jacksonville, Fla., as director for product line development, from 1987 to 1988, as administrative assistant to the COO in 1987, and administrative resident in 1986.
In addition to his service to ACHE, he has been a member of the boards of the Georgia Association of Healthcare Executives; Georgia Hospital Association; West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition; Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, serving as chairman of its Healthcare Committee; Calvary Christian School; and Columbus Technical College Foundation, serving as its chairman-elect.
Avery received his master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Florida and his bachelor’s degree in management from the United States Air Force Academy.

Frank D. Byrne, MD, FACHE, is president at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, Wis.

Since his arrival in 2004, St. Mary’s has opened $184 million major expansion to the hospital that included an expanded Emergency Department and updated facility for its Cardiac Center. St. Mary’s is also implementing an inpatient electronic health record in May. St. Mary’s was accredited by the Joint Commission as the region’s first Primary Stroke Center and was designated a Thomson 100 Top Hospital for 2006.
Prior to this, Byrne was executive vice president of Parkview Health, Fort Wayne, Ind., from 2002 to 2003. He also served Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind., as president from 1995 to 2002 and medical director from 1994 to 1995. His previous roles included pulmonary/critical care physician, Indiana Regional Medical Consultants PC Fort Wayne, Ind., from 1982 to 1994; medical director, Respiratory Care, St Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind. from 1982 to 1994. He has also participated in international medical work in Moldova, and at the Indiana University HIV/AIDS program in Eldoret, Kenya.
In addition to his service to ACHE, he has been a member of the board of the American College of Physician Executives, which will be inducting him as a Distinguished Fellow in April. He also has been on the boards of Dean Health Plan; SSM Health Care of Wisconsin; Fort Wayne Hospital Administrative Council, serving as its chair; Indiana Healthcare Executive Network; Lincare Holdings; Steel Dynamics Inc.; Amerinet Central; and the Indiana Health Industry Forum. He is also a member of the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association.
Byrne received his doctor in medicine from the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn College of Medicine, his master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Marie Cameron, FACHE, is executive-in-residence and instructor at the Institute of Health Administration in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Since fall 2006, Ms. Cameron has been the executive-in-residence and instructor at the Institute of Health Administration in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where she teaches and serves as the liaison between the academic program and practitioners in the healthcare field. She facilitates collaborative efforts between the program and healthcare organizations, state agencies and other groups to design and develop plans, assessments, approaches and models for service delivery.
From 2004 to fall 2006, Ms. Cameron served as managing partner for the RMP Group in Atlanta, a healthcare consulting firm that provides specialized services in operations management, financial case management, business development, corporate compliance, diversity management and leadership training. Prior to joining RMP, Ms. Cameron served as president and chief executive officer of Southwest Hospital and Medical Center in Atlanta from 1995 to 2004. From late 1993 to 1995, she was the interim executive director and chief executive officer of Howard University Hospital, Washington, D.C., where she began in 1991 as associate executive director and chief operating officer. Prior to that, Ms. Cameron served in positions of progressive responsibility at Children’s national medical center in Washington D.C. from 1979 to 1991 as a Vice President of Administrative Services, Vice President of Professional Services and Laboratory Administrator. She began her healthcare career in 1977 as an administrative intern at a Washington DC hospital and then moved to a small rural hospital where she served as an assistant hospital administrator.
Ms. Cameron has served as Chair of the Hospital Medicaid Advisory Board of the Georgia Department of Community Health and on the boards of the Georgia Hospital Association, the Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Advisory Board of the Institute of Health Administration.
She received her master’s degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.

Ms. Edwards has served as executive vice president and administrator for Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center since 2003. St. Francis Medical Center is a 130-bed acute-care hospital that opened in September 2005. It features a 24-hour emergency room, an obstetrics/gynecology department, an orthopedics department, a surgery department, a cancer care center, a diagnostic services center and a medical office building. As executive vice president and administrator, Ms. Edwards provided administrative leadership for planning and opening St. Francis Medical Center and continues to be responsible for the financial oversight of hospital operations.
Prior to joining Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, Ms. Edwards served as executive administrator of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Associates in Richmond, Va., from 1999 to 2003. From 1990 to 1999, Ms. Edwards was with Williamsburg Community Hospital, Va., where she began as vice president of Facilities until 1995, when she was promoted to chief operating officer. Prior to that, Ms. Edwards served Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, a subsidiary of Columbia/HCA, from 1984 to 1990, first as director of nursing finance, then rising to assistant administrator and later becoming associate administrator.
She has served on the board of directors of the Central Virginia Health Executive Group and the Richmond Medical Group Management Association, where she was president in 2002 and 2003. Ms. Edwards was appointed to the Personnel Appeals Board of Chesterfield County and to the Workers Compensation Review Board for the State of Virginia. She is a past board chair of the Olde Towne Medical Center. In addition, Ms. Edwards was awarded the Thomas C. Barker Award in 1998 for Outstanding Preceptor for the Master of Health Administration program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia and the ACHE Regent’s Early Career Healthcare Executive Award for Virginia in 1993.
Ms. Edwards received her master’s degree in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, and her bachelor’s degree in public administration from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.

Sanford M. Garfunkel, FACHE, is network director for the VA Capitol Health Care Network with the Department of Veterans Affairs, in Linthicum Heights, Md.

Mr. Garfunkel has served as network director for the VA Capitol Health Care Network since April 2007. As network director, Garfunkel is responsible for a $1.1 billion budget and for VA healthcare facilities, including medical centers and community-based outpatient clinics, throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and portions of Virginia and West Virginia.
Prior to his current position, Garfunkel served as director of the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center for 12 years. He also served in leadership positions in VA medical centers in Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn, N.Y., and East Orange, N.J., as well as VA Central Office, Washington, D.C. Garfunkel has had a distinguished career with the Department of Veterans Affairs. He was selected as Federal Manager of the Year by New York City Metropolitan Federal Executive Board in 1986. In 1991, he was the first VA executive to win the Executive Excellence Award of the Senior Executives Association. Garfunkel was awarded the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award in 1991, 2000 and 2006 and the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award in 1994.
In addition to his service to ACHE, Garfunkel has served on the Board of Directors of the District of Columbia Hospital Association and the Senior Executives Association.

In addition, he was president and chief executive officer for a captive insurance company, an information technology company, an ambulance service, a home care company and several other health-related entities. Before joining Health Quest, Mr. Henley served as executive vice president and treasurer at Vassar Brothers Medical Center and prior to that held several senior financial executive positions at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
Mr. Henley has held faculty appointments in several graduate programs in healthcare administration, including the Mount Sinai School of Medicine–Baruch College Graduate Program in Health Care Administration, and has held a number of leadership positions with the Healthcare Financial Management Association, including national chairman. Mr. Henley has been active in community organizations, serving on the board of the American Heart Association, the Business Advisory Council of the School of Business at the State University of New York at New Paltz, the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation and the Advisory Board for Hudson United Bank–New York Region. Mr. Henley also served as chairman of the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation. He is a past recipient of Modern Healthcare’s Up-and-Comer Award.

Knodel was named senior vice president/CNO at St. Alexius Medical Center in 1990. She is responsible for executive organizational responsibilities, setting the overall vision and direction for the division of nursing and physician practices. Knodel also actively participates in organizational strategic planning such as achieving magnet status, patient safety, technology advancement, strategic partnerships and new facilities. She also is accountable for quality, regulatory and accreditation processes. Knodel has coordinated the organizations’ 30-member community advisory board and assisted the governing board in the area of corporate policies and bylaws.
Prior to this, Knodel served St. Alexius Medical Center as director of Quality Review/Risk Management from 1985 to 1990, establishing a medical staff quality review program; director of Acute, Outpatient, Home Dialysis and Apheresis Programs from 1975 to 1985, developing the first satellite hemodialysis units and a home peritoneal dialysis program in North Dakota.
In addition to her service to ACHE, she has been a member of the boards of the American Organization of Nurse Executives; American Hospital Association (Regional Policy Board); North Dakota Catholic Conference; Southwest Region Workforce Training Board for the North Dakota State University System; and Heart and Lung Clinic LLC. In 2007, Knodel received the Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Award from ACHE’s Regent for North Dakota.

During his time there, he has launched a managed care growth strategy, initiated multi level market share growth across all service lines, and finalized business plans to open an affiliated freestanding 40-bed acute-care rehabilitation hospital.
Prior to this, Lopez was the CEO/managing director of St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Enid, Okla., from 1997 to 2004, where he was responsible for the transition of ownership from the Sisters of Mercy Health System to Universal Health Services. His previous roles included serving as executive vice president for Mercy Health System, Oklahoma City, Okla., from 1987 to 1996; serving Mercy Hospital of New Orleans as executive vice president in 1986, vice president from 1982 to 1986, assistant vice president from 1981 to 1982, and administrative assistant from 1980 to 1981.
In addition to his service to ACHE, he has been a member of the boards of the Business Advisory Council, serving as its honorary chair; Amarillo College Foundation; Women’s Health Research Institute; Amarillo Chamber of Commerce; and the Amarillo United Way. The system’s flagship hospital is Poudre Valley Hospital, a 295-bed tertiary referral center in Fort Collins, Colo.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Stacey served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Francis Hospital and Health Center in Chicago from 1994 to 1996. Before joining St. Francis, Dr. Stacey served as chief executive officer of St. Vincent General Hospital in Leadville, Colo., and Summit Medical Center in Frisco, Colo., from 1989 to 1994. Dr. Stacey began his healthcare career as assistant administrator of Ninth Strategic Hospital, Beale Air Force Base, Calif., from 1986 to 1989.
Dr. Stacey has served on the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees subcommittee on Governance, the board of directors of the Colorado Hospital Association, and currently as the chair of the board of directors of VHA Mountain States. He is on the board of directors of the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce and was appointed last year by the Governor of Colorado to serve as a member of the statewide Medical Services Board. Dr. Stacey received the 2006 HOPE Award from the Northern Colorado Multiple Sclerosis Society, was named the Northern Colorado Business Leader of the Year in 2005 by the Fort Collins Coloradoan, received the 1999 Robert S. Hudgens Award for young healthcare executive of the year from ACHE and is a past recipient of Modern Healthcare’s Up-and-Comer Award.
Dr. Stacey earned his doctoral degree in health policy from the University of Colorado at Denver and his master’s degree in health administration and bachelor’s degree in urban economics from Brigham Young University.

Christopher D. Van Gorder, FACHE, is president and chief executive officer, Scripps Health, San Diego.
Board certified in healthcare management and an ACHE Fellow, he also serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of 30,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare leaders by providing exceptional value to its members.
Mr. Van Gorder has served as president and chief executive officer for Scripps Health since 2000. Scripps Health is a not-for-profit, integrated healthcare delivery system with five acute-care hospitals, Scripps Clinic, an ambulatory care network and more than 2,600 affiliated physicians. Mr. Van Gorder’s responsibilities include all functions of the $1.6 billion corporation.
From 1999 to 2000, Mr. Van Gorder served Scripps Health as chief of Healthcare Operations. Prior to joining Scripps Health, he served Memorial Health Services (MHS) in Long Beach, Calif., as executive vice president of MHS (1996-1999), chief executive officer of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (1997-1999) and president and chief executive officer of Anaheim Memorial Medical Center (1995-1997).
He currently is regional policy board member for the American Hospital Association, board member of the California Hospital Association, and editorial board member of The Governance Institute in addition to several local leadership roles. Mr. Van Gorder also was appointed to the U.S. National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization in December 2004 and California Governor’s Commission on Emergency Medical Services in March 2006. He is a Reserve Lieutenant in command of the Medical Unit of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Bureau.
Mr. Van Gorder received his master’s degree in public health and health services administration from the University of Southern California and his bachelor’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles. He completed the Program for Healthcare System Chief Executive Officers of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
