  Advancement to Fellow

The Mentorship Option

What Is a Mentorship Project?
A mentorship that fulfills the requirements of a Fellow project is a highly structured experience in which the Fellow candidate (a CEO, COO, or other executive) helps to advance a junior executive's management leadership development. It documents the involvement, judgment, and leadership development ability of the candidate. The Fellow candidate who chooses this option serves as a mentor for a one-year period to an early-level manager or a junior executive in the early stages of his or her career.

Larry A. Mullins, D.H.A., FACHE

“As professionals, we have an obligation to cultivate new leaders and position them to contribute to the field. Through the Fellow mentorship project I was able to provide a junior executive with opportunities to experience C-suite strategic operations and policy development, something that she otherwise would not have been exposed to for many years. I am convinced that the mentorship experience played a major role in the advancement of her career. I thoroughly enjoyed the mentorship project; it gave me a renewed perspective and a sense of optimism for the future of the field.”

President and CEO, Samaritan Health Services
Corvallis, Ore.

Exploring the Mentorship Option
Your role as a mentor is to counsel and advise. At the same time, you cultivate leadership development opportunities for your junior executive—either in your organization or in the healthcare management field. To be a mentor, you must:
  • Be a part of your organization’s management team, with significant experience in the field
  • Have sufficient time and energy to invest in fostering the growth and development of the junior executive

Your junior executive need not be your direct subordinate or a part of your organization. However, the junior executive must without exception be an affiliate of ACHE, be in the early management phase, and have already attained a degree in healthcare management (senior executives are not acceptable even if new to healthcare management). You must also hold face-to-face meetings at least quarterly, but preferably once each month.

As part of the project, during the one-year mentorship, you are required to:

  • Create a professional development plan for your junior executive
  • Submit three quarterly reports
  • Submit a final report
