What
Is a Case Study?
A case study is a written account of a real-life healthcare
management problem. It documents management judgment and
decisions made in identifying, analyzing, and resolving the
problem. Under this option, the completion of four
case studies is required to achieve Fellow status.

“Composing
the case studies provided me with the opportunity
for reflective thinking to clearly identify key
lessons to apply in future situations. For example,
one of my topics focused on the transitioning of
early-generation physician hospital partnerships
into sustainable long-term partnerships. Ultimately,
a well-done case study is an important knowledge-transfer
tool that captures and shares new ideas, problem-solving
and trouble spots with readers facing similar challenges.”

Exploring
the Case Studies Option
When selecting a topic, consider the following
questions:
- Which of my current projects have broad implications
for healthcare management?
- What is my greatest career achievement?
- For what am I known and respected?
- What experiences could I share that would benefit the
field?
If
you need assistance further defining your topic, contact
ACHE at (312) 424-9400. We are here to help you in the
process! In addition, your FACHE colleagues who have completed
case studies are an excellent resource.
Once
you have selected a topic, submit a proposal to ACHE for
approval. When the topic is approved, you may begin writing
the study. While ACHE permits proofreading assistance,
we require that the Fellow candidate be the author of the
reports.
The
Credentials Committee reviews each case study. The committee
evaluates them on the merits of their ability to:
- Recognize and define problems
- Use analysis and critical reasoning to find solutions
- Analyze management decisions and actions
- Present and report information
ACHE
asks each Fellow candidate to follow a standard format
for your topic proposal and case studies. Descriptions
of the case study project and how to complete and format
your project are detailed in the Fellow
Project Guide (PDF).
