Candidate
Guidelines for the Offices of Chairman-Elect, Governor, and
Regent-at-Large, and Nominating Committee Positions

carefully review these guidelines before applying for a position.

This document
serves as a guide to individuals interested in pursuing service
on the ACHE Board of Governors, as a Regent-at-Large, or on
the Nominating Committee. These guidelines provide a chronological
overview of the process as well as instructions for submitting
an application and letters of support.
A
candidate for the office of
Chairman-Elect, Governor, Regent-at-Large
or Nominating Committee must
be an active Fellow of ACHE.

Call for Applications/Meeting
Notice #1
DECEMBER
- Open positions (positions
to be slated) and the first meeting of the Nominating Committee
are promoted in the Chapter newsletter's, winter edition,
published December through March.
- Open positions are posted
on ache.org.
JANUARY
- Open positions/the first
Nominating Committee meeting are promoted in the January/February
and March/April issues of Healthcare Executive
magazine.
- Open positions/the first
Nominating Committee meeting are promoted in the January
Report to Regents mailing.
- Open positions/the first Nominating
Committee meeting are promoted in ACHe-news.
- Applications to serve will
only be accepted between January 1 and the July 15 deadline.

Nominating Committee
Meeting #1 (Congress meeting)
MARCH
- Open
positions are promoted in the Chapter
newsletter's, spring edition, published
March through June.
- Open positions are promoted in ACHe-news.
- The
Nominating Committee Chairman meets
with the Board of Governors to hear
the Board’s
view on the type of leadership necessary
for the future. It is the policy
of the Board of Governors that members
of the Board will not support any
candidate for the offices of Chairman-Elect
or Governor.
- The ACHE president/CEO meets
with the Nominating Committee to share input on the type
of leadership necessary for the future.
- The Nominating Committee
holds an Open Session to:
1. Hear ACHE affiliates’ views regarding the type of leadership
needed for the future.
2. Conduct an orientation for potential candidates to answer
questions regarding the process.
- The Nominating Committee
holds a closed session to review affiliate input. All deliberations
of the Nominating Committee are confidential.
- Candidates are prohibited
from directly contacting members of the Nominating Committee.

Candidates
for Chairman-Elect and Governor
should submit an application
to serve, a copy of the candidate's
resume, and up to 10 letters
of support (that should come
directly from the candidate,
not ACHE) to the Chairman of
the Nominating Committee, c/o
Julie Nolan, ACHE, 1 N. Franklin
St., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL
60606-4425. Candidates for Regent-at-Large
and the Nominating Committee
should only submit a letter of
self-nomination and a copy of
their resume. No applications
will be accepted after the July
15 postmark deadline. Materials
can also be sent via e-mail to
jnolan@ache.org or
faxed to (312) 424-2828. All
candidates will be listed in
the Affiliates Only Area of ache.org under
the heading "Declared Candidates." Any
candidate not listed by July
31 should contact Julie Nolan
at
(312) 424-9367 or jnolan@ache.org.
Nominating Committee
Meeting #2
SEPTEMBER
- The
Nominating Committee will meet to determine which candidates
for Chairman-Elect and Governor will be interviewed in person
on the last Thursday in October. All candidates will be notified
in writing of the committee's decision by September 30.
Nominating
Committee Meeting #3
LAST
THURSDAY IN OCTOBER
- Members
of the Board of Governors may contact the Chairman of the
Nominating Committee to provide confidential input on the
candidates for Chairman-Elect and Governor.
- The
Nominating Committee will interview each invited candidate
for the offices of Chairman-Elect and Governor in person.
Each interview will begin with an opening statement by the
candidate not to exceed 10 minutes in length for Governor
candidates and 15 minutes in length for Chairman-Elect candidates.
The interview will last no more than 20 minutes for Governor
candidates and 30 minutes for Chairman-Elect candidates.

Candidates will be reimbursed for reasonable, actual travel
expenses incurred within policy guidelines.
- The
slate is selected by vote of the Nominating Committee.
- Every
candidate for Chairman-Elect, Governor,
Regent-at-Large, and Nominating
Committee will be contacted in person
or by phone by a member of the Nominating
Committee and informed of the committee’s
decision.
- All
deliberations of the Nominating Committee are confidential.
Announcement of the Slate
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER
- Memos are sent to the Board
of Governors and Council of Regents announcing the slate.
- The
slate is announced in ACHe-news and posted on ache.org.
JANUARY
- The slate is announced in
the January/February issue of Healthcare Executive
magazine.
Council of Regents Meeting
MARCH
- The slate is listed in the
Council of Regents agenda book (mailed to Regents one month
before meeting) as the report of the Nominating Committee.
- For the office of Chairman-Elect
only, the candidate makes a speech to the Council of Regents,
not to exceed five minutes in length, before the Regents
vote on the slate.
- The Council votes on the
slate.
- Newly elected Chairman-Elect,
Governors, Regents-at-Large, and members of the Nominating
Committee are recognized at the March Council of Regents
Meeting.
Application
to Serve as Chairman-Elect or Governor
The
application to serve as Chairman-Elect or Governor consists of
a letter declaring your desire to serve and a brief document—not
to exceed eight double-spaced typed pages—that
answers the following questions:
- Please
list your qualifications
to serve as a Governor
or Chairman-Elect of ACHE.
Place special emphasis
on your service to ACHE
as an elected official
(e.g., Regent, Chapter
President), committee appointee
(at both the local and
national levels), mentor,
recruiter, etc. Also highlight
any other experience you
have serving associations
at the local, state
and national level.

Given the healthcare environment today, how would you plan to maintain and enhance ACHE’s position of leadership?
- How would you help implement ACHE’s current strategic
plan?
- How will the responsibilities and time requirements of serving as a Chairman Officer/Governor for three years fit with your personal and professional commitments? Is your health status compatible with the demands of the office?
- Do you have any other thoughts regarding ACHE, its current activities or its future?
The
application to serve, a copy of the
candidate's resume, and up to 10
letters of support (that should be sent directly to the candidate and then he or she should send them to ACHE) must
be postmarked no later than July 15
and sent to the Chairman of the Nominating
Committee, c/o Julie Nolan, ACHE,
1 N. Franklin St., Suite 1700, Chicago,
IL 60606-3424. Since these materials
must be reproduced, bound copies will
not be accepted. Materials
can also be sent via e-mail to jnolan@ache.org or
faxed to (312) 424-2828.
