Health Law Today

The uncertainty surrounding the future of the U.S. health delivery system and upheaval over the Affordable Care Act have compounded the already-complex challenges today’s healthcare leaders face. Effective executives must be cognizant of continually changing legal and regulatory issues in areas as diverse as billing compliance, patient rights, liabilities associated with HIT and the mandatory reporting of quality metrics.

Health law is a vast and complex field; this up-to-date course will highlight the most crucial information for busy healthcare executives. An experienced health law professor will facilitate learning by explaining legal issues within a broader context while encouraging interaction and discussion among participants through weekly postings and open forums. The course will review key legal and compliance topics, including fraud and abuse, HIPAA, patient privacy, medical malpractice, HCQIA requirements for credentialing and more. You will leave with a better understanding of the health laws that are critical for effective healthcare administration today.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an overview of health law, including both civil and criminal liabilities.
  • Explore how state jurisdiction and federal law interact in the realm of healthcare.
  • Assess evolving quality and reimbursement legislation, including MACRA, Hospital Value-Based Purchasing and the ACA, which reflect forces growing stronger in the U.S. healthcare system.
  • Recognize how the development of HIT, the continuing battle over the ACA and the emergence of new antitrust guidelines will all affect healthcare executives in the future.
