Leadership’s Role in Implementing the National Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare Harm

May 5, 2021 Webinar Recording

While efforts to improve patient safety have been ongoing, the scale of improvement has been limited and inconsistent, often failing to integrate and optimize the disparate work of the many stakeholders working on patient safety. Experts have called for increased coordination to improve patient safety for decades, but this strategy has not been fully instituted. Recognizing this shortcoming, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement convened the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety, a 27-member group representing the diverse stakeholders involved in patient safety, to develop a National Action Plan for the Prevention of Health Care Harm, to recommend coordinated strategies to accelerate progress in patient safety and identify opportunities to collaboratively advance those strategies. The National Action Plan seeks to lay the foundation for improving safety by encouraging healthcare leaders and policymakers to establish cultures of safety.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the rationale for establishing greater coordination among patient safety stakeholders across foundational areas of improvement.
  • Describe key recommendations in the National Action Plan and identify strategies, tools and resources for use in implementation.
