Chief Medical Information Officer, University of Missouri Healthcare; Medical Director, Tiger Institute for Health Innovation

Thomas Selva, MD, is the chief medical information officer of MU Health Care and the medical director of Tiger Institute for Health Innovation. He is also a professor of child health.

Dr. Selva is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, finishing his graduate training in 1989. Then, he pursued his pediatric residency at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in the Department of Child Health, where he ultimately served as chief resident in 1992. Upon completing his training, Dr. Selva was recruited to start a “Private Practice in an Academic Setting,” one of the first of its kind. Shortly after starting his academic career, Dr. Selva was recruited to also serve as a research associate in the Medical Informatics Group, which later became the Department of Health Management and Informatics.

In the CMIO role, Dr. Selva bears responsibility for governance of EMR implementation and improvement. In addition, he guides the selection and installation of new health IT applications and serves to guide cybersecurity for the institution. As CMIO, Dr. Selva is also the medical director of the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation, guiding the vision of this private-public partnership between Cerner and the University of Missouri. In this role, he continues to pursue interests in user-focused design, human factors engineering and reducing cognitive load.
