Susan L. Turney, MD, is the CEO of Marshfield Clinic Health System, serving in this role since Sept. 2014. Through its entities, MCHS provides patient care, research, education, healthcare technology and health insurance for Wisconsin and beyond.

She is recognized as a national thought leader in healthcare and expert in strategic planning, executive management and external relations. She is sought out as a speaker by national organizations and is a member of the Modern Healthcare CEO Power Panel. In 2021, she was named to Modern Healthcare’s list of “Top 25 Women Leaders,” and she was named to its lists of “50 Most Influential Physician/Clinical Executives” and “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” for several years.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Turney was president/CEO of Medical Group Management Association from 2011 to 2014. She also served as CEO and executive vice president of the Wisconsin Medical Society, 2004–2011. She is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives, having earned that distinction in 2005.

Dr. Turney was an internal medicine physician at Marshfield Clinic, 1982–2004, serving in education and leadership roles, and as medical director for patient financial services, 1995–2004.

Dr. Turney, a native of Mellen, Wis., graduated from Northland College, Ashland, Wis., and the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her internal medicine residency at Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic/Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital and earned a master in administrative medicine degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
