Biography

William Fintel, MD, has served as the Medical Director of Hematology and Oncology at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA since 2019. He has been a community medical oncologist for 31 years in southwest Virginia as part of Blue Ridge Cancer Care and has serviced as its president for 11 years. He got his BS from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, his MD from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and he completed his Internal Medicine residency and Heme-Onc fellowship in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In his current role at Carilion Clinic, he is in the process of growing a burgeoning oncology program by developing a new destination cancer building to enhance all services in the region where is a $100M philanthropic effort underway. Laboratory and pathology services are a focus of these enhancements, as he believes accurate and timely diagnostic testing is the bedrock of cancer care. One unique aspect of his health system is that it collaborates with many partners, and so “connecting the dots” is one of his chief roles: helping cancer patients by helping cancer professionals to create data that is accurate, timely, disseminated and discoverable across electronic medical records.
