CHICAGO, August 8, 2003—Andrew N. Garman, Psy.D., and J. Larry Tyler, FACHE, FAAHC, are the winners of the American College of Healthcare Executives’ 2003 Health Management Research Award for their study “Succession Planning Practices and Outcomes in U.S. Hospitals: A Multilevel Analysis of Survey-Based Data.” They will receive $10,000 to support their research.

Their research will determine to what degree succession planning is used in healthcare organizations and to what extent hospital leaders have been involved in such processes. In addition, the research will examine the current approaches to healthcare executive succession planning, the individual and organizational barriers to establishing a program, and the perceived value of succession planning within the field. The researchers will survey chief executive officers and board chairs within the field to determine their views on and experiences with succession planning. Responses of the two groups will be analyzed to identify differences in the views of CEOs and board chairs.

ACHE introduced the Health Management Research Award in 1988 to enhance managerial effectiveness and/or career opportunities in health services administration. It is awarded annually through monies left to the Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives by the late Foster G. McGaw, founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation. The award is granted to ACHE affiliates who are full-time faculty of health administration programs. Selections for the award are made by ACHE’s 12-member Higher Education and Research Committee.

Garman is associate professor in the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush University in Chicago. He is also a Faculty Associate of ACHE. Garman earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA, and his master's degree in personnel/human resource development from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Tyler is president of Tyler & Company, a healthcare executive search firm based in Atlanta. He earned his master’s degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta.
