Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients face many challenges in accessing knowledgeable, unbiased and welcoming healthcare. Some experience suboptimal care and refusals to treat, and may delay or avoid needed healthcare for fear of discrimination. As these and other challenges come to light, healthcare leaders are recognizing the need to treat this patient population with compassion and sensitivity.
This engaging presentation will review the health concerns of LGBT people and their families, a patient group that is large, yet often overlooked. CMS and The Joint Commission have each issued requirements designed to ensure equity for LGBT patients. In addition, The Joint Commission’s LGBT Field Guide and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation Healthcare Equality Index provide a wealth of information about best practices in LGBT patient-centered care.
- Challenges that LGBT patients face in healthcare
- Health Disparities experienced by LGBT people as a group
- Requirements from CMS and The Joint Commission regarding LGBT patient-centered care
- How the HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index can be used as a tool to assess your organization’s care for this community
- An overview of best practices in nondiscriminatory care for LGBT patients and their families
