Virtual Executive Program 650X320

Monthly Membership Perk:

Improving Today's Healthcare Model With Music

Using music as a metaphor, author Stephen K. Klasko, MD, encourages readers of his new book, Feelin' Alright: How the Message in the Music Can Make Healthcare Healthier, to examine what is problematic in the existing healthcare model and to take tangible steps toward a more consumer-centered healthcare experience.

Each chapter of Klasko’s book features his multifaceted perspective, drawn from his varied professional experiences, and is anchored with a song that reflects the chapter’s central themes. Klasko has worked as a physician, health system CEO, and university president and dean. In his current role as executive in residence at General Catalyst, he now bridges the gap between academic health systems and digital health innovators and entrepreneurs.

In Chapter 3 from his book, Klasko writes that moving from sick care to health assurance for all will require humans and technology to come together to create a future of “healthcare at any address.” When that happens, the resulting devices will change the lives of millions. In addition, when technologies such as remote patient monitoring, telehealth and artificial intelligence come together, they not only promise to reduce the amount of time that physicians need to care for each patient while improving the quality of care, but also reduce costs.

Klasko recently co-presented a session at the 2023 Congress on Healthcare Leadership on how executives can successfully create a path within healthcare organizations to set up other leaders for success. In case you missed him at Congress, you can listen to Klasko on this episode of the Healthcare Executive Podcast as he examines what healthcare CEOs will need to be successful leaders going forward, and delves into the relationship between music and healthcare.

We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.

Sustaining Care Innovation in a Value-Based World

Value-based care not only advances quality and equity in healthcare, but it accelerates innovation, writes Theo Koury, MD, in an ACHE Blog post. It also rewards preventive care and effective management of chronic conditions by tying hospital and clinician reimbursement to patient outcomes, and is driving a rise of team-based care models, data-driven medicine and provider connectivity, says Koury, president, Vituity, and an ACHE Member.

As health systems slowly adopt value-based care, their leaders remain enthusiastic about its possibilities. However, concern also lingers that it might stifle the innovation it intended to drive. Koury addresses these concerns in his blog post, as well as some of the challenges of transitioning to this mode of care delivery. He also advises healthcare leaders to look toward their patients as their North Star in their transition to value-based care. “Yes, it’s true that the lure of cost-containment and financial rewards may initially draw many organizations into risk-based arrangements. However, the beauty of value-based care is its patient-centric heart. It finally and definitively links financial success to improved health and quality of life,” he writes.

Koury is one of three speakers who will present “Leadership Insights: Innovations in Value-Based Care” during ACHE’s 2023 Virtual Leadership Symposium, Tuesday, May 9, through Wednesday, May 10. Koury, along with co-presenters Garth Walker, MD, medical director, Value-Based Care, RUSH Health, and Donna Littlepage, CPA, senior vice president, Accountable Care Strategies, Carilion Clinic, will discuss innovations in value-based care and what healthcare executive need to know before, during and after the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care.

Learn more about the 2023 Virtual Leadership Symposium and register today to take advantage of the early bird rate, available until April 24.
