Monthly Membership Perk:

Safeguarding Your Most Important Asset

More than 20 months after the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in the U.S., the pandemic continues to take a toll on our healthcare workforce. A Kaiser Family Foundation/Washington Post poll found that about three in 10 healthcare workers considered leaving their profession, and about six in 10 said pandemic-related stress had harmed their mental health.

In recognition of the staffing crisis the healthcare field is facing, this month we are offering a free resource to help healthcare leaders retain employees. In this chapter From Navigating the Healthcare Workforce Shortage: How to Safeguard Your Organization’s Most Important Asset, Tresha D. Moreland, FACHE, and Lori Wightman explore what executives can do before employees resign in the first place. These actions can include conducting stay interviews with existing staff to measure their satisfaction and likelihood of staying with an organization, leveraging rewards and use of talent management.

We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.

Lab Staffing Shortages Call for New Options

Although staffing shortages didn’t begin with the COVID-19 pandemic, the health crisis revealed just how acute these shortages are, with many healthcare institutions scrambling to find qualified personnel in every department.

Clinical labs have not escaped this personnel crisis. The gap between available jobs and qualified candidates in clinical lab science has multiple causes. They include too few lab science training programs and pay incommensurate with the skills the clinical lab professional brings to the bench.

It will take time to address the causes of lab staff shortages. However, in the short term, healthcare executives facing personnel gaps in their lab operations have options. These include increasing the efficiency and value of lab testing menus and protocols, using consultation services to analyze and prioritize in-house testing, and partnerships to help with lab management operations.

No one short-term resolution is going to be the right fit for every healthcare institution, and the best solutions should be tailored to current needs and flexible enough to adjust as demand grows. With the right staffing options, the quality of care provided will improve and costs are more easily contained.

Learn more about staffing shortage issues and the full range of lab service options available to healthcare leaders in an April 28 ACHE webinar, “Addressing Workforce Shortages in Healthcare.” Jay G. Wohlgemuth, MD, senior vice president, Research and Development/CMO, Quest Diagnostics; Cecilia McKenney, senior vice president/chief human resources officer, Quest Diagnostics; and Christine Tobias, vice president, Laboratory Operations, North Region/CEO, Quest Diagnostics Venture, LLC, will present at the webinar, which is free and eligible for 1 ACHE Qualified Education credit.
