OR Humidity Levels: A Second Look
Ongoing documentation of temperature and humidity on procedural days in the OR is essential to compliance, writes Richard L. Parker, FASHE, FACHE, in an issue of OR Today.
Parker writes that a response plan for when these measures fall out of range will factor in the amount of deviation, the duration of deviation and the time of day that deviation occurs. He looks to the deviation data points to inform an organization’s response plan.
“This plan should be developed using a multidisciplinary team approach from perioperative services, infection control, engineering, sterile processing and risk management. Identifying the impact on patient safety, services and supplies when temperatures or humidity levels fall out of the acceptable range in surgical suites will significantly aid in developing an effective response,” according to Parker.

Ethics and Management Dilemmas in Healthcare
In this updated edition of The Tracks We Leave, author Frankie Perry, RN, LFACHE, aims to help current and future healthcare managers prevent moral mistakes and create an ethical culture within their departments. The decision-making process in healthcare management is complex, multifaceted and usually involves several stakeholders with different perspectives and diverse values. Perry provides practical guidance for navigating multidimensional ethical dilemmas that managers may experience on a daily basis.
This month, chapter 24, “Ethics Issues in Managed Care”, is free to ACHE members. The complimentary chapter focuses on the often turbulent co-existence of medical ethics and managed care.
The book’s fourth edition includes five new chapters and examines the correlation between ethics and management, as well as the need for managers to consider ethical implications when making managerial decisions.

3 Steps to Improve Firearm Safety in Healthcare
Two years before the U.S. Surgeon General declared firearm violence a public health crisis, Paul B. Hofmann, DrPH, LFACHE, called for healthcare organizations to start doing more to address the issue. “A number of healthcare organizations have taken initiatives to address firearm violence, but active engagement is needed by more health systems and hospitals already committed to improving community health status,” says Hofmann.
In his recent blog post “The Hospital’s Role in Promoting Gun Safety,” Hofmann cites three examples of what organizations could do. Hofmann says, “From the perspective of healthcare providers, the most critical issue is what more can be done at the local level.”
