Cultivating Respect: The Foundation of Leadership
“Respect for self and others is the nucleus of all activities, especially in management,” writes Carson F. Dye, FACHE, in Chapter 6 of his book, Leadership in Healthcare: Essential Values and Skills, Fourth Edition. Written from the perspective of a seasoned healthcare consultant with more than 40 years of leadership and management experience, Dye’s book focuses on the importance of developing a core set of values that drive our actions when things get difficult. In this revised and expanded fourth edition, he also addresses new topics such as inclusive leadership, clinical integration, employee burnout and post-COVID-19 leadership.
At no other time in history has healthcare leadership been so critical. To help both students and practicing professionals alike develop the skills they need to lead effectively through challenging times, we are offering Chapter 6 free of charge to members. Titled “Respect as the Foundation of Leadership,” this chapter explores the distinction between self-esteem and self-centeredness and suggests several approaches for showing and gaining respect.
We hope you enjoy this complimentary Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.
Focusing the Climate Lens on Healthcare
“If the healthcare field were a country, it would be the fifth-greatest polluter worldwide, according to a 2019 Health Care Without Harm report, Health Care’s Climate Footprint: How the Health Care Sector Contributes to the Global Climate Crisis and Opportunities for Action,” writes Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD, FACMI.
Since joining The Joint Commission, Oakbrook, Ill., as its president and CEO in 2022, Perlin has made it a top priority to launch three critical strategic initiatives to help advance healthcare equity, support the workforce and improve environmental sustainability in healthcare. These initiatives are closely linked and have assumed prominence on The Joint Commission’s agenda.
In the July/August “Improving Patient Care” column, Perlin outlines actions The Joint Commission is taking to fulfill its pledge to reduce the carbon contribution emanating from the healthcare sector, and help support healthcare organizations becoming more resilient to the effects of climate change. He also highlights the essential role that healthcare leaders play in improving environmental sustainability at their organizations. “Their commitment to decarbonization starts with providing leadership for this important initiative. They can begin with designating an individual or individuals responsible for the oversight of activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

The Practice of Self-Coaching
“The concept of ‘self’—self-awareness and the ability to coach and motivate oneself—is critical,” writes Laurie K. Baedke, FACHE, in Chapter 10 of her book Mentor, Coach, Lead to Peak Professional Performance. In a recent ACHE Blog post, we distill some of the practical guidance Baedke offers in this chapter on self-coaching:
“The practice of self-coaching consists of a hearty helping of reflection, the pursuit of feedback, leading by example, and a never-ending hunger to grow (reading, learning, listening to podcasts, enrolling in professional development programs, etc.). One must be intentional in embarking on these behaviors and in practicing them to reach new heights of self-understanding and leadership prowess. There is much to be said for baring one’s own understanding of self to others—for being vulnerable and courageous in communicating to those around us our shortcomings and natural proclivities, right alongside our strengths and the discoveries that inspire the individuals we lead, mentor, sponsor, coach, organize, lift and motivate around shared goals.”

Key Financial Principles for Healthcare CEOs
“It is essential that healthcare CEOs have a deep understanding of a broad range of topics, from the quality of clinical care to the competitive environment, and how those factors impact financial sustainability,” writes Charmaine S. Rochester, DHA, FACHE, CPA, CFO, Florida Region, Cleveland Clinic, Weston, Fla.
In a recent Q&A, Rochester shares her financial expertise to answer questions such as “What are the most important financial principles that CEOs should know” and “What should healthcare CEOs consider regarding the impact of today’s financial environment on their organization’s ability to pursue major capital projects?”

CMS Announces Medicare Dementia Care Model
To promote care and support for people with Medicare living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers, the Department of Health and Human Services recently introduced its Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience, or GUIDE, Model. The aim of the model, announced July 31 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, is to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia, reduce strain on unpaid caregivers and help people remain in their homes and communities through a package of care coordination and management, caregiver education and support, and respite services.
The GUIDE model will be tested by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, and is a key deliverable from President Joe Biden’s April 2023 Executive Order on Increasing Access to High-Quality Care and Supporting Caregivers, as well as key goals of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease.
More information is available in a GUIDE model overview fact sheet.
