Virtual Leadership Program

Success of Strategic Plan Depends on Implementation

Organizations with a strong strategic plan can easily navigate change, deciding which initiatives to postpone, add or prioritize so they can adapt to changing conditions. But without the right preparation, even the most well-designed planning process can fall flat.

“Without a clear sense of the sequencing of activities and the ideal progression, planning participants may have different expectations of what is to be done and in what order,” write John M. Harris and Meredith C. Inniger, FACHE, in Healthcare Strategic Planning, Fifth Edition. “As a result, key stakeholders may feel reluctant to participate in the planning process or feel removed from it entirely.”

In addition to step-by-step guidance, this new edition of the book contains recent research on strategic planning and updated best practices. The authors have added information on the importance of strategic thinking in management, effective stakeholder engagement, a seamless transition from planning to implementation, and ensuring commitment—including how to maximize results through annual plan updates. These tools can help “CEOs, physicians, trustees and other professionals understand key concepts and make the planning process a robust learning experience for their organization.”
