Using Appraised Evidence to Drive Decision Making
To drive meaningful organizational change, Neel Pathak, DSc, FACHE—healthcare leader, professor and new ACHE faculty—advocates for a disciplined approach to decision making. “It starts by asking the right questions and using critical thinking, multiple sources of insight and the best available evidence to inform the path forward,” said Pathak.
He believes leaders can strengthen decision quality through the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of evidence—drawn from multiple sources. At a recent ACHE seminar, he introduced practical tools and strategies designed to help healthcare executives navigate complexity and make more informed, high-impact managerial decisions.
Pathak emphasized the value of using critically appraised evidence—from operational data to stakeholder insights—to guide decision making with greater precision. Drawing from current research in healthcare management, he highlighted that leaders who apply evidence-based methods systematically are more likely to drive measurable improvements in outcomes, resource optimization and organizational performance.
Pathak has delivered his message to leadership teams to health systems, professional organizations and global innovators. ACHE to Administer Summer Enrichment Program for Aspiring Healthcare Leaders
ACHE is proud to announce a new chapter for the Summer Enrichment Program for graduate students in healthcare management. The program will now be administered by ACHE following the successful transition of the initiative from the American Hospital Association.
“We are honored to carry forward this important program and its legacy,” said ACHE President and CEO Deborah Bowen, FACHE, CAE . “The internship provides hands-on experience in healthcare settings, mentorship by industry professionals and a direct path to developing the skills required to navigate today’s complex healthcare environment. We look forward to welcoming the next cohort of future leaders through the program in the summer of 2026.”
Since its inception in 1994, more than 1,500 interns have successfully completed the Summer Enrichment Program with many former interns having advanced to C-suite positions, including CEOs, at hospitals across the U.S. This esteemed internship program, long recognized for developing emerging talent in healthcare leadership, will continue its mission under the guidance of ACHE. The program provides opportunities for students to gain experience in a variety of practitioner settings.
Interns will be placed in leading healthcare organizations across the country, where they will engage in real-world projects and gain insights into community health, hospital operations, strategic planning, technology and quality improvement initiatives. ACHE’s administration of the internship program aligns with its broader mission to advance healthcare leadership and management excellence through education, certification and career development opportunities.
The Summer Enrichment Program will launch in the fall of 2025 and accept graduate students pursuing careers in healthcare administration, public health or related fields.
