Leadership Spotlight:

Hardwiring Innovations to Shape New Strategies

Faced with another surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, many organizations find themselves better prepared to handle the new influx of patients. In the delivery of virtual healthcare, for instance, providers had no choice during the past year and a half but to respond with lightning speed, regardless of existing capabilities. In many cases, these efforts ended up exceeding expectations and moving organizations a few steps ahead of where they thought they would be with technology.

In this issue of Healthcare Executive, you will discover how six organizations of different sizes (two small, two medium and two large) are solidifying their technology strategies to rebound from the worst of the crisis and carry on, more digitally committed and attuned. For example, you’ll learn about how one midsized hospital addressed coverage problems in the ED and ICU with portable telerobots. This technology allowed specialists to examine patients and communicate with hospital staff from afar.

As you read “Hardwiring Innovations: How Leaders Are Shaping New Strategies,” we hope you’ll find examples of healthcare technology suited to your organization’s needs, whether you’re leading a 50-bed rural hospital or an integrated multibillion-dollar health system.

Your August Gift: Bolstering D&I Through Mentorship and Sponsorship

Both mentorship and sponsorship are valuable and necessary tools not only for developing leaders but increasing diversity and inclusion. This month, we are offering two free resources to help healthcare leaders become executive champions of identifying, growing and retaining promising diverse leaders.

In “The Value and Imperative of Diversity Leadership Development and Mentoring in Healthcare,” Raúl H. Zambrano, MD, FACHE, explores how many racially and ethnically diverse healthcare executives must navigate their career journeys differently than their white counterparts, and how securing a dedicated mentor can make a difference in this process. He also shares how his own experience with a mentor, through the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program, impacted his career. This article was originally published in the November/December 2019 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management.

Then, in chapter five of Diversity on the Executive Path: Wisdom and Insights for Navigating to the Highest Levels of Healthcare Leadership, Diane L. Dixon, EdD, distinguishes between the advice and guidance given by a mentor, and the additional “economic benefits” a protégé receives from a formal sponsor. Dixon also outlines how stereotypes and cultural norms might make advancement for diverse leadership candidates more challenging and uses data to demonstrate how sponsorship can help overcome these challenges.

Through Sept. 7, members receive an additional 20% off Diversity on the Executive Path and other already-discounted Health Administration Press books during the HAP Summer Sale. For more resources on career advancement for diverse healthcare executives, visit Executive Diversity Career Navigator

CMS Expands Medicare Payments for At-Home COVID-19 Vaccinations

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced measures to boost vaccine access in smaller group homes, assisted living facilities and other group-living situations. To ensure Medicare beneficiaries who have difficulty leaving their homes can access COVID-19 vaccinations, CMS last week said healthcare providers can now receive additional payments for administering vaccines to multiple residents in one home setting or communal setting of a home. Delivering COVID-19 vaccination to access-challenged and hard-to-reach individuals poses some unique challenges such as ensuring appropriate vaccine storage temperatures, handling and administration. The additional pay will also help vaccine providers meet these challenges.

CMS and its partners have provided a variety of information online for providers vaccinating all Americans regardless of their insurance status. Following are some of those resources:
