Leadership Spotlight: Webinar: An Evolving Approach to Fighting COVID-19
Disease management of COVID-19 is advancing through optimal use of diagnostic tools. This Thursday, join a free webinar to hear from healthcare leaders at NorthShore University HealthSystem and Roche Diagnostics Corporation. They will help attendees understand the available diagnostic tools for COVID-19 disease management. Participants will develop a deeper knowledge of the tools used for managing patients with acute-phase infections, how diagnostics may be used for understanding immunity to the novel coronavirus and implementation of testing strategies to flatten the curve.

2020 Healthcare Trends Revisited
At the start of 2020, we talked about voice-assisted technology, wearables and interoperability as being the hot topics for the year in healthcare. By early March, COVID-19 took hold around the world as hospitals were planning for surges and millions of patients came to embrace telehealth. In addition, the rising awareness of social justice protests has an important implication as we examine social determinants of health and their impact on communities of color.
As we enter the second half of 2020—a year most of us will never forget—we’re revisiting themes we discussed at the start of the year and finding that a majority fall into two main groups: financial viability and innovation. These themes will play a vital role as hospitals and health systems determine their strategies for the remainder of the year. To see the 11 healthcare trends, click here.

CMS: Training Program to Strengthen Nursing Home Infection Control Practices
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is implementing a nursing home training program to equip front-line caregivers and their management with best practices to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The training will be available immediately to the staff of America’s 15,400 Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes. Training will focus on critical topics like infection control and prevention, appropriate screening of visitors, effective cohorting of residents, safe admission and transfer of residents, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.
The first-of-its kind scenario-based training is called the “CMS Targeted COVID-19 Training for Frontline Nursing Home Staff and Management” and it has been designed specifically with COVID-19 in mind. The program features a tailored course that incorporates the most recent lessons learned from nursing homes and teaches front-line staff best practices they can implement to address issues related to COVID-19. The training is available now on the CMS Quality, Safety & Education Portal, with five specific modules designed for front-line clinical staff and 10 designed for nursing home management.

August Member Gift: Book, Article, Webinar on the Multigenerational Workforce
Managing a multigenerational workforce culture posed unique challenges before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, adding additional challenges for communication, organizational culture and team building. This month, we are offering members access to exclusive content that addresses the critical topic of how to effectively manage a workforce that includes different age groups.
In a chapter from his book, Intangibles: The Unexpected Traits of High-Performing Healthcare Leaders (Health Administration Press, 2018), Amer Kaissi, PhD, explores how younger people differ from other age groups in terms of humility, and how that affects their leadership style.
Meanwhile, Jim E. Parsons, FACHE, discusses how healthcare leaders can support the development of a workforce that is better engaged with the mission of healthcare through proper planning and review. His article, “Addressing Workforce Challenges in Healthcare Calls for Proactive Leadership,” appeared in the Summer 2019 issue of the journal Frontiers of Health Services Management.
Finally, faculty experts Mary Cronin and Tonia Ferguson with St. Luke’s Health System in Boise Idaho, share how their organization engaged millennials to improve retention of younger staff members and create an effective professional development program in the webinar “Engaging Millennials Through Professional Development.”
