Hospital CEO Turnover Rate Remains Steady
Hospital CEO positions turned over at a rate of 16% for the third consecutive year in 2022, according to a recent report by the American College of Healthcare Executives.
The 16% turnover rate in 2022, 2021 and 2020 is the lowest the industry has seen since 2011, when it also was at 16%. Turnover among hospital CEOs has trended downward since hitting 20% in 2013, the highest since ACHE began tracking this data in 1981.
“As hospitals continue to wrestle with workforce and financial challenges, the value of strong and capable leaders in healthcare has never been more important,” says Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, ACHE’s president/CEO. “That makes succession planning such a critical piece to ensuring that healthcare organizations have a pipeline of leaders who are well-prepared to address the challenges of tomorrow.”
The CEO turnover rates listed in the report are based on changes in an organization's CEO, as reported to the American Hospital Association and confirmed from ACHE data and public sources.
Getting to Know Your Hospital’s Clinical Lab
If you want to get a holistic view of how your hospital or health system runs, the lab department is a great place to begin when rounding. Here’s how to get started:
- Meet with your lab’s leadership. While rounding, talk to them about what a day in the life of the laboratory is like. Where do they think they could play a stronger role in providing value-based care? What are the challenges that slow their progress? What is their understanding of the ways in which they contribute to the care your system provides? You will walk away with some rich insights.
- Ask how the lab collaborates with other departments. Hospital leaders should devote time to understanding areas like respiratory, pharmacy and the lab to ensure they can articulate how these areas contribute to patient care. If something goes wrong with a patient, it’s typically because there were problems across multiple departments. That’s why it’s important that everyone works together for the common good.
- Spend time with the techs and phlebotomists. When you round with phlebotomists and bench techs who are doing the day-to-day job as well as the lab assistants who are processing samples, ask them about their jobs and listen. When healthcare leaders engage with their employees this way, patients ultimately get better service and the organization performs better financially. A hospital leader being present takes time and effort, but it also reaps a lot of rewards.
