Cultivating Leaders With Stretch Assignments
The future of healthcare is already working in your organization, and empowering this talent ensures employees grow into leaders prepared to tackle complex challenges. Between 2020 and 2023, Mayo Clinic launched two programs to foster internal talent: the Stretch Assignment Program and Mayo Clinic Rising. The initiatives address professional development needs, such as perceived limited opportunities, the desire for more mentorship and the need to break down silos that hinder collaboration.
In an ACHE Blog, “Unlocking Leadership Potential: How Stretch Assignments Drive Diversity and Growth in Healthcare,” Britany J. McElroy, FACHE, director of strategy, and Jordan Roloff, operations administrator, detail the compelling cost/benefit scenario these types of programs offer organizations, weighing the individual’s investment in participation time with the ability to mitigate high costs associated with turnover in leadership roles.
“By leveraging stretch assignments, healthcare organizations can build a diverse and capable leadership pipeline, ensuring robust succession planning and fostering a culture of continuous growth and development,” write McElroy and Roloff. “The success of these programs underscores the potential of people and the transformative power of investing in internal leadership growth.”

In Frontiers: Skills Today’s Healthcare Leaders Need
Carla Jackie Sampson, PhD, FACHE, looks back on her own career in an editorial in the winter issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management to understand how leadership has evolved significantly. Though traditional leadership focused more on efficient execution and productivity, with little room for collaboration and inclusion, today’s human-centered approach encourages diverse perspectives, team building and innovation to meet unexpected challenges and rapid change.
Also in this issue:
- Michael E. Frisina, PhD, describes the neuroscientific approach to creating leadership development programs.
- Andrew Shin, a senior vice president of strategy at Mass General Brigham, Boston, examines how to develop leaders who can help organizations respond—with purpose—to challenges that lie ahead.
- Stacey-Ann Okoth, FACHE, defines essential leadership competencies for the next generation of nurse leaders, whose roles in the 21st century are “more critical than ever.”
- James L. Hill Jr., MD, FACHE; Joanne M. Conroy, MD; and Ruben J. Azocar, MD, discuss various leadership roles that physicians can assume beyond the bedside.
- Teri G. Fontenot, LFACHE, in an excerpted article from Frontiers Summer 2012, recounts her personal journey into healthcare leadership and offers practical suggestions on how women can ascend to the upper echelons of their organizations.

Choosing to Pursue the FACHE® Credential?
For anyone considering whether to pursue the FACHE credential, listen to what your colleagues who have earned it have to say. For instance, Andrew S. Mullins, FACHE, CEO, Lifeline of Ohio (Columbus), asserts, “Find out what you need to do now to be able to become a Fellow. You'll never regret it.”
Angela R. DeLaere, FACHE, president/CEO, Visiting Nurse Association & Blue Water Hospice, Port Huron, Mich., echoes that sentiment. “Fellow status has helped me in my career,” she says. DeLaere doesn’t believe that she would be at this point in her career without this important healthcare profession credential.
Learn more about earning the credential by participating in a complimentary FACHE overview webinar set for Dec. 12. Participants will get a complete overview of the process, including eligibility requirements, materials needed for the application process and information about how to prepare for the Board of Governors Exam. Participants can also ask questions during the presentation.
The webinar is free, but registration is required.
