ACHE Member-Led Hospitals Recognized Within IHF’s COVID-19 Response Program

Six hospitals led by ACHE Members and Fellows were among 103 organizations worldwide recently recognized by the International Hospital Federation’s Beyond the Call of Duty for COVID-19 Program.

IHF selected the winners for the exceptional service they provided in response to the pandemic. Following a call for entries this summer, an international review committee consisting of 16 industry experts from the healthcare field chose 103 hospitals and healthcare systems from 28 countries to be recognized for going “beyond the call of duty.”

These organizations, which include 13 hospitals and health systems from the United States, demonstrated “initiative, agility, and an incredible capacity to innovate under extraordinary circumstances,” according to a Dec. 15 IHF press release.

The six organizations chosen for recognition that are led by ACHE Members and Fellows are:

As part of the recognition program, IHF has featured the stories of select hospitals, including Northwell Health, New Hyde Park, N.Y., in a special feature. Additionally, IHF designated Dec. 15 as a global day of awareness for the selfless dedication of all hospitals and healthcare providers in their fight against COVID-19.

Students and Host Sites: Register for the 2021 Summer Enrichment Program

Registration is open for the American Hospital Association’s Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s 2021 Summer Enrichment Program. The Summer Enrichment Program grows and strengthens the pipeline of healthcare leaders from underrepresented groups, and places diverse graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in healthcare administration or a related field in 10-week, paid internships across the country. Internships generally will take place from June through August.

ACHE and the Institute are co-promoting the SEP to increase the number of students who participate in the SEP each year and, accordingly, increase the number of host sites. Just as students benefit from experiential learning, healthcare organizations that register to become host sites gain access to the healthcare leaders of tomorrow—former SEP interns are now CEOs and administrators of hospitals and healthcare organizations nationwide.

Summer Enrichment Program host sites can accelerate the healthcare field’s efforts to diversify its workforce, leadership teams and governing boards, which contribute to improved patient care for all. Help strengthen equity and inclusion in healthcare organizations—learn more and register today.

CMS Updates for COVID-19 Vaccine Codes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced Dec. 14 it has updated its payment and HCPCS Level I CPT code structure for specific COVID-19 vaccine information. This announcement was made with regard to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Dec. 11 issuance of an Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. CMS also announced that during the pandemic, Medicare will cover and pay for the administration of the vaccine, when furnished consistent with the EUA. CMS advises providers to only bill for the vaccine administration codes when they submit claims to Medicare, and not to include the vaccine product codes when vaccines are free. Additionally, CMS shared Pfizer’s fact sheet for healthcare providers administering vaccine regarding the limitations of authorized use.
