Finding Joy and Impact in the Messy Middle
Talented healthcare professionals stand out early in their careers. They’re motivated, educated, personable and plan to make big waves in the industry. As life unfolds, however, it can throw a curveball into the best-laid plans. In a Healthcare Executive podcast, Antwan Williams, COO of Orlando (Fla.) Health South Seminole Hospital, and Alex Maiersperger, global head of product marketing, Health Care, SAS, discuss how to successfully navigate the mid-career phase.
“There are so many, often-competing, priorities that don’t get the sort of priority in conversation that I think they deserve,” says Maiersperger. The mid-career day-to-day doesn’t have either the excitement of just graduating or the seniority where colleagues seek out your opinion, adds Williams, pointing out that in the “messy middle,” it’s often tough to get perspective on achievements, ambition, satisfaction and salary. “Our goal is to be a supportive force as folks move into a stage of happiness in their career,” he says.
Hear from Williams and Maiersperger in person at the Congress on Healthcare Leadership on Tuesday, March 25 in Houston, where they will be joined by Cachet Colvard, head of partnerships, Guaranteed Health. The trio will be presenting Leadership Insights: Mid-Career Mastery—Finding Joy and Impact While Navigating the Messy Middle of Your Healthcare Career.

Sustainable Healthcare Depends on Good Governance Practices
In Environmental, Social, and Governance: A Framework for the Future of Healthcare, Carla Jackie Sampson, PhD, FACHE, delves into environmental, social and governance principles and illustrates how to integrate them into daily operations. She explores developing climate-smart initiatives and examines the effect of environmental factors on credit ratings. She reviews five principles that perpetuate inequity while also connecting medical caregivers with their community. Finally, Sampson speaks to the importance of creating and maintaining board diversity.

Apply for the 2025 Summer Enrichment Program
Registration is open for the American Hospital Association’s Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s 2025 Summer Enrichment Program. This program seeks students with a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and health equity through lived experiences to strengthen the pipeline and build the next generation of leaders in healthcare.
This opportunity is a 10-week, paid internship program for graduate students who are pursuing an advanced degree within healthcare or a related field. Students in the program are paired with a healthcare organization, where they will benefit from experiential learning, mentorship, networking and the opportunity to learn from experts in the field. Experienced administrators serve as preceptors and mentors, providing support and career advice as well as critical early-career connections.
ACHE and the Institute are co-promoting the program to increase the number of students who participate and, accordingly, increase the number of host sites. Healthcare organizations that register to become a host site gain access to these healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
Internships generally take place June through August. Learn more and apply today.
