Program Spotlight: Women in Healthcare Leadership

Studies estimate burnout affects up to 55 percent of physicians nationally, and female physicians are faced with further challenges, according to Fayola Edwards-Ojeba, MD, founder and CEO of RechargedMD, Oakland, Calif. With fewer females in leadership roles, women are less likely to be promoted or receive equal pay, she shares in a Jan. 7 ACHE blog post. Edwards-Ojeba founded RechargedMD to address physician burnout and identify and remediate it within hospital systems.

She will be one of seven speakers presenting at the 2020 Congress on Healthcare Leadership during the session, “Women Physician Leadership: Strategies for Success.” Edwards-Ojeba and her co-presenters will provide a detailed review of the women physician leadership landscape, including the limited number of female physician CEOs and CMOs. Senior leaders from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, Lebanon, N.H.; Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center; Mayo Clinic Health System, Rochester, Minn.; the American Medical Association, Chicago; and HCA TriStar Division, Brentwood, Tenn., will also be presenting.

Other Congress sessions that will address women’s leadership in the healthcare field include “Creating Greater Gender Diversity in Healthcare Leadership Circles” and the Women Healthcare Executives Breakfast, “A New Day Is Dawning: Building the Competencies to Thrive.”

Stokes, Schulte, Keehan to Receive Awards

ACHE has announced the 2020 recipients of the Gold Medal Award, Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year, and Honorary Fellow.

Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, former president and CEO, Memorial Hermann Health System, Houston, is the recipient of the Gold Medal Award—ACHE’s highest honor bestowed on outstanding leaders. It identifies Fellows of ACHE who best exemplify leadership at the organizational, local, state/provincial and national levels, and recognizes individuals who go beyond the confines of their own organization to continually contribute to the improvement of healthcare services and community health.

Mark Schulte, FACHE, market president, Monument Health Sturgis (S.D.) Hospital, is the recipient of the Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year. The award honors outstanding achievement in the field of healthcare management and is given to an exceptional healthcare executive who is younger than 40, a Fellow of ACHE and holds a CEO or COO position in a healthcare organization.

Sister Carol Keehan, DC, HFACHE, former president/CEO, Catholic Health Association of the United States, has been selected as an Honorary Fellow of ACHE. Honorary Fellowship is a special category of ACHE membership that recognizes individuals who have rendered distinguished service in the healthcare field or related areas, and who would not ordinarily be an ACHE member.

ACHE will formally present these accolades during its 63rd Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago, March 23–26. General information about the awards and all other ACHE awards can be found at ACHE News and Awards on ache.org.

New Book: Understanding Your Ethical Responsibilities

“Healthcare leaders and those aspiring to be leaders must recognize first and foremost that character and integrity constitute the very cornerstone of leadership,” writes Frankie Perry, RN, LFACHE, in The Tracks We Leave: Ethics & Management Dilemmas in Healthcare, Third Edition, (Health Administration Press, 2020).

This most recent edition provides guidance for current and future healthcare managers as they confront the ethical challenges of their daily work: medical errors, physician impairment, workforce reductions and end-of-life decisions.
