CMS Directs Additional Resources to Nursing Homes in COVID-19 Hotspots

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced Thursday a targeted approach to provide additional resources to nursing homes in COVID-19 hotspot areas.

Specifically, CMS plans to do the following:

  • Deploy Quality Improvement Organizations across the country to provide immediate assistance to nursing homes in the hotspot areas as identified by the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
  • Implement an enhanced survey process tailored to meet the specific concerns of hotspot areas and coordinate federal, state, and local efforts to leverage all available resources to these facilities.

The purpose of these efforts is to target facilities with known infection control issues by providing resources and support that will help them improve quality and safety and protect vulnerable Americans. This is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of nursing home residents across the country during the public health emergency.

Web Extra: Helping Physicians During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Healthcare executives can do a lot to support their physicians on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. Experts recommend the several strategies for helping physicians manage the physical, emotional and financial toll of battling the virus. For example, implementing virtual town hall meetings offers a way for community-based physician to stay connected. At Memorial Hospital, Bradley (Brad) S. Talbert, FACHE, president and CEO, worked with the vice president of physician and provider relations to implement regular, virtual town hall meetings for physicians. He believes these meetings help physician practices stay informed and connected to the hospital when they are especially hungry for information and guidance on managing patients who may be infected with COVID-19.
