Assembling Your Leadership Team of Experts

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost every aspect of the healthcare field has changed, from workforce to leadership. In Cracking the Healthcare Leadership Code: How Purpose, Humility, and Accessibility Can Transform Your Organization, author Kevin Joseph, MD, FACHE, outlines his experiences and uses his book to guide those new to leadership in the healthcare sector. Joseph is a physician leader who is well-versed in the interactions between physicians, administrators and clinical staff.

In Chapter 4 of his book, Joseph discusses the importance of building the team around you, which can shift the culture and result in improved patient outcomes and metrics. He specifically discusses what qualities to look for in choosing your staff, such as finding experts in their line of work and relying on them. He goes on to describe selecting individuals who will fit well in your organization’s culture but still think differently and challenge you. In this chapter and throughout his book, Joseph shares one of his guiding principles as a healthcare executive: Remove the power gradient and put people first.

ACHE Seeks Nominations for Its Most Prestigious Awards

ACHE is accepting nominations for the Gold Medal Award, the Lifetime Service and Achievement Award, and the Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year.

  • The Gold Medal Award is the highest honor bestowed by ACHE on outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the healthcare profession. This award identifies ACHE Fellows who best exemplify leadership at the organizational, local, state/provincial and national levels, and who continually contribute to the improvement of the delivery of healthcare services and community health. The deadline for submission of the nomination packet is Aug. 16.
  • The Lifetime Service and Achievement Award recognizes Life Fellows and Retired Fellows who have made outstanding, nationally recognized contributions to advance the profession of healthcare management and ACHE. The deadline for submission of nomination letters is July 17.
  • The Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year recognizes early careerist Fellows for outstanding achievements in the field of healthcare management. The deadline for submission of nomination letters is July 17.

Members are uniquely positioned to identify deserving leaders for nomination, and we ask for your assistance in encouraging worthy candidates. Ensuring Inclusion and Respect in Healthcare

“At the Department of Veterans Affairs, we have a motto: ‘We Serve All Who Served,’” writes Amir Farooqi, FACHE, in a recent ACHE Blog post. “This statement is meant to demonstrate that we serve and respect our LGBTQ+ veterans, and it is often paired with rainbows to emphasize the point. To me, that statement and that rainbow mean even more. They demonstrate one of the most important principles we can hold as healthcare leaders: ensuring that all our patients and all our communities are served and that we create a safe environment for our employees to thrive regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin or religion. In other words, ensuring that we lead inclusive organizations that recognize and value the great ideas and outcomes that can come from an inclusive workforce.”

As director/CEO of the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System, Montgomery and Tuskegee, Ala., and 2023–2024 chair of the ACHE LGBTQ+ Healthcare Leaders Community Committee, Farooqi is passionate about serving his veteran community and ensuring that all the veterans he serves—including LGBTQ+ veterans—know that they can receive “appropriate and supportive care” in the system he leads.

Reminder: Help Shape Our Policy Statements

Each year, select Policy Statements are reviewed to ensure their continued relevance to the field. Many of these statements are derived directly from comments you have shared with us. For that reason, we are asking for your input. Please take a moment to read the Code of Ethics and five Policy Statements under review this year:

Please submit your comments to PolicyReview@ache.org. The deadline for submitting comments is June 30. The Board of Governors will discuss these statements and any recommended revisions during its December meeting. The revised statements will be posted on ache.org in early 2024.

Join HHS for a Webinar on How to Prevent Workplace Violence

June 27, the National Action Alliance to Advance Patient Safety and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention are sponsoring a webinar on how to address violence in the healthcare workplace. “Preventing Workplace Violence” will feature Cammie Chaumont Menendez, PhD, a research epidemiologist with the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Also participating will be front-line practitioners who are implementing violence prevention strategies across healthcare settings.

This webinar is part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ summer webinar series sponsored by the National Action Alliance—a public-private effort to support healthcare delivery systems’ move toward zero harm.

The learning of the National Action Alliance builds upon recognized frameworks such as Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety, with its four foundational areas of culture, leadership and governance; patient and family engagement; workforce safety; and creation of learning health systems. The national action plan, which includes recommendations for workforce safety, is the work of 27 federal agencies, safety organizations, experts and patient and family advocates, including ACHE. This resource and other tools, including Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success, are available on ache.org/Safety.
