Post-Coronavirus: The Path Forward

Healthcare leaders should strategically consider how to transform and reinvent health services given the new normal. Many organizations are now moving from managing incident command teams that care for COVID-19 patients to managing the financial implications of the pandemic to their organizations. This pandemic has created unexpected consequences for the healthcare delivery system, and many interim measures will likely become a part of the new normal for healthcare providers.

The demand for service, disruption in supply chains and chronic cash shortfalls are examples of COVID-19 consequences that a second surge of COVID-19 cases would make even more permanent. The business imperative is to rethink your service lines and expense posture. These decisions may be radical and could become lasting features of operations. Successful organizations will rely on the science of management and resist letting intuition guide decisions. The ability to use data and information will be critical to empower teams and keep providers adaptable.

This is an unprecedented time in healthcare, during which boards and C-suite executives have a unique opportunity to truly transform their organizations. The pandemic has highlighted how agile, nimble, efficient and innovative organizations can be. Now is the time to use these lessons learned to create your path forward to the new normal. The key to success will be to design a plan that is agile and has well-defined priorities and goals for what will evolve into a long-term recovery plan.

CMS: Reopening of Facilities Encouraged

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a guide for patients and beneficiaries as they consider their in-person care options. During the height of the pandemic, many healthcare systems and patients postponed nonemergency, in-person care to keep patients and providers safe and to ensure capacity to care for COVID-19 patients. As states and regions across the United States see a decline in cases of COVID-19, CMS is providing these recommendations to ensure that nonemergency healthcare resumes safely, and that patients are receiving needed in-person treatment that may have been postponed due to the public health emergency.

As the country continues to reopen, patients have questions about when to resume in-person visits with their clinicians. To aid patients in making a decision that is right for them, CMS issued recommendations to help guide patients as they consider seeking in-person, nonemergency treatment. Ultimately, patients should rely on their providers’ suggested course of treatment.
