Safety Tip:
Establish a Compelling Vision for Safety
Patient safety expert M. Michael Shabot, MD, says “High reliability and zero harm can only be achieved through executive leadership; it cannot succeed as a grassroots effort.”
To demonstrate patient and workforce safety as a primary goal, healthcare CEOs should work with their board, clinical leadership and workforce to develop a vision, according to Shabot, executive vice president and system chief clinical officer for Memorial Hermann Health System, Houston. Top management should develop a successful vision statement that engages the entire workforce and medical staff.
Learn more about establishing a compelling vision for safety by downloading Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success, a resource jointly developed by ACHE and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute. And hear directly from Shabot during the special three-hour session on July 30 at the New York Cluster, “Leveraging Leadership for High Reliability Safe Care.”
