Steer Your Leadership Experience With Simulation Education
In today’s healthcare environment, leaders must be adept at navigating the changing consumer and regulatory landscapes. This year, healthcare leaders have three opportunities to experience the challenges of executive leadership and strategic decision-making with the Health System Simulation program, while earning up to 21 ACHE Face-to-Face Education and Interprofessional Continuing Education credits. Offered in collaboration with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, this unique two-day learning experience emulates the full breadth and complexity of leadership in today’s competitive marketplace.
Unfamiliar with simulation education? In this episode of the Healthcare Executive Podcast, John S. Winkleman, faculty member at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, discusses the innovative new Health System Simulation course. He explains why simulation learning is particularly effective for healthcare leaders, as it allows them to see what happens when they’re in the driver’s seat. And, check out this ACHE Blog post that lists the many benefits of simulation education such as real-time feedback and the freedom to make mistakes.
Upcoming virtual sessions are scheduled Aug. 4–6, Oct. 13–15 and Dec. 8–10. More information about the October and December sessions will be available soon. Learn more and register today.

Delivering the Care Experience Consumers Want and Expect
“The coronavirus pandemic has validated the principles of this book: that we need healthcare with no address, helping people where they are and when they need it,” writes Stephen K. Klasko, MD, in the preface to his book, Patient No Longer: Why Healthcare Must Deliver the Care Experience That Consumers Want and Expect.
In this book, released by Health Administration Press, Klasko, former president, Thomas Jefferson University, and former CEO, Jefferson Health, and co-author Ryan Donohue, strategic adviser, NRC Health, explore the evolving delivery model of patient-centric care and the rise of the healthcare consumer as a powerful new voice. They provide compelling reasons why consumer-centric care is so crucial, and how leaders can work to build health systems focused on it. Order your copy today.
Webinar: Managing Value-Based Network Performance
As Delaware Valley ACO and its affiliated providers move from fee-for-service to value-based care, it needs stakeholders to engage with analytics at all levels to achieve its mission: “accelerate the successful transformation to high quality value-based care in the region.” During the June 29 webinar “Managing Value-Based Network Performance via Advanced Analytics,” participants will examine how two traditional health systems and their affiliated providers are moving to value-based care.
Featuring Delaware Valley ACO as a case study, healthcare leaders from the organization will identify the analytical tools necessary for success under value-based care in the evolving world of population health. They will also describe the kind of clinical leadership needed to drive success across a large network of providers.

CMS: Medicare Covers Separate Visit for Cognitive Assessment
For patients with a cognitive impairment, Medicare covers a separate visit for an assessment so providers can more thoroughly evaluate cognitive function and help with care planning, according to the the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Any clinician eligible to report evaluation and management services can offer this service, including physicians (MD and DO), nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and physician assistants.
The Cognitive Assessment & Care Plan Services (CPT code 99483) typically start with a 50-minute face-to-face visit that includes a detailed history and patient exam. CMS advises providers to use information from the exam to create a written care plan. The care plan should include initial plans to address:
- Neuropsychiatric symptoms.
- Neurocognitive symptoms.
- Functional limitations.
- Patient or caregiver referrals to community resources, as needed, with initial education and support.
Medicare also pays approximately $283 (may be geographically adjusted) for these services when providing in an office setting. Providers can get details on Medicare coverage requirements and proper billing by visiting cms.gov/cognitive.
