Rethinking Employee Well-Being Today to Advance Patient Safety
Although there has been real progress made in patient safety during the past two decades, current estimates cite medical harm is a leading cause of death worldwide, according to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Preventing harm in healthcare settings is a public health concern, and ACHE is dedicated to amplifying the importance of safety and serving as a catalyst for the field of healthcare management.
In recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 12–18—a dedicated time and platform sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for growing awareness about patient safety and recognizing the work already being done—ACHE encourages everyone in healthcare to become familiar with or revisit resources and tools available on ache.org/Safety, including Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety and Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success.
Workforce Safety: A Necessary Precondition to Advancing Patient Safety
One of the four foundational areas of the National Action Plan—workforce safety—focuses on the commitment to the safety and fortification of the healthcare workforce as a necessary precondition to advancing patient safety. To advance patient safety within this area, leaders must assume accountability for the physical and psychological safety of their workforce and create a healthy work environment that fosters joy.
Many complex pieces must come together to shape an environment that makes work fulfilling, energizing and enriching; helps employees feel valued and creates a sense of belonging; and ultimately, drives performance in all areas. During “Hot Topic: Employee Well-Being Ecosystem: Reimagining the Workplace of the Future,” leadership expert Quint Studer identifies interconnected components that work together and lay the groundwork for employee well-being—from leader mindsets to relationship-building skills to organizational excellence, communication and more.

JHM Gets Back to Looking Forward With 2023 Gold Medal Award Winner
In the March/April Journal of Healthcare Management, John M. Haupert, FACHE, president/CEO of Grady Health System, Atlanta, and the 2023 recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives’ Gold Medal Award, shares how Grady is rebounding from the effects of the pandemic and getting back to looking forward.
In another feature, Ghazala Q. Sharieff, MD, FACHE, and Craig Uejo, MD, describe Scripps Health’s systemwide sprint teams’ approach to quality improvement. Despite the speedy simplicity, or maybe because of it, the intended results have been quickly realized.
Research articles in this issue include findings from Hossein Zare, PhD, Corinne Logan and Gerard F. Anderson, PhD, who examined how state reporting requirements for community benefit influence hospital activities. They share that mandating reports is associated with greater provision of some services, but not all. Other research articles in this issue examine factors that most influence patient recommendations, how the CMO’s scope is growing and how there is much room for improvement in board diversity.
