Program Spotlight: Frontline Solutions to the Opioid Crisis
The opioid crisis is one of the most pressing public health issues of our time, but hospitals and health systems are rising to the challenge with exciting developments and innovative solutions. At this year’s Congress on Healthcare Leadership, explore alternative ideas for delivering meaningful solutions to reduce opioid abuse and related deaths during “Thursday Hot Topic Session 2: Opioids: Frontline Solutions for Today and the Future.” There, you’ll hear from Steven K. Magid, MD, chief medical information officer, Hospital for Special Surgery; Benjamin A. Hohmuth, MD, chief medical informatics officer, Geisinger Health System; John M. Kravitz, senior vice president/CIO, Geisinger Health System; and Seth A. Waldman, MD, director, division of pain management, Hospital for Special Surgery.
The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York has been a leader in this arena, having established a Controlled Substances Task Force in 2016. Learn more about HSS’ efforts to achieve cultural transformation in pain management in a Q&A with Waldman on ACHE’s blog.

Heeding the Call for Inventive Leadership
“Never has it been more important for leaders to show courage, learn, and guide their organizations to the front lines of innovation,” writes the author of an article in the spring 2020 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management.
In “Defining a New Leadership Model to Stay Relevant in Healthcare,” Gary S. Kaplan, chairman/CEO, Virginia Mason Health System, Seattle, differentiates his organization’s current leadership model from previous approaches and describes key strategies leaders can leverage to stay relevant.
This issue features the perspectives of Kaplan, Nancy Howell Agee, president/CEO, Carilion Clinic, Roanoke, Va., and other healthcare leaders who have taken a leap into unchartered territory to discover new and improved ways to serve their patients and communities.
Read more from the new Frontiers to learn how the leaders of high-performing hospitals and health systems are innovating to take their organizations to the next level of performance.
