Program Spotlight:
Discover Innovations Driving Healthcare Today and in the Future
It’s no secret that technology has and continues to play an essential role in enabling patients to continue receiving care during the pandemic. Just last week, a new report from KFF found that although in-person care has resumed for many types of outpatient care visits, telehealth use has remained strong for mental health and substance use treatment, still representing 35% of these outpatient visits.
At next week’s 2022 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, March 28–31, and the Virtual Leadership Symposium in April, attendees will find no shortage of sessions that address topics like innovation and healthcare IT. Following are previews of innovation and HIT-focused sessions at both events.
Congress on Healthcare Leadership
- At Masters Series: Masters of Innovation, you’ll join Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD, president/CEO, Geisinger Health, and Wendy Horton, PharmD, FACHE, CEO, University of Virginia Medical Center, two healthcare leaders recognized for employing innovation in their strategies and operations to improve patient outcomes, engage their staff and clinicians, and provide more efficient and positive outcomes.
- Hear from Rachel Wilson, managing director/head of cybersecurity of wealth management, Morgan Stanley, during Hot Topic: Driving Innovation for New Cybersecurity and Authentication Technology, as she describes the latest innovations in cybersecurity and authentication technology, and identifies strategies that healthcare leaders can take to prevent cyberattacks.
- During Leadership Insights: The Healthcare System of the Future, Sam Hazen, CEO, HCA Healthcare, will discuss some of the top disruptors in today’s healthcare organizations, including digital health innovations.
- Join Karen DeSalvo, MD, chief health officer, Google, as she explores the latest trends at the intersection of medicine, public health and information technology during Hot Topic: Leveraging Technology to Address Healthcare’s Biggest Challenges.
Virtual Leadership Symposium

Innovating for Minimally Invasive Care
Rising consumerism, shrinking margins, increasing regulatory complexity, and growing physician and nursing shortages are a perfect storm of challenges affecting healthcare organizations. In this environment, many hospitals and health systems are exploring opportunities that might help them achieve better outcomes, lower the total cost of care, and provide a better experience for both patient and provider.
To help organizations on their journey, Intuitive—maker of the minimally invasive da Vinci surgical system—published The Case for Financial Viability in the Innovative OR. This e-book discusses the potential impact of robotic-assisted surgery in a value-based market, offering real-world insight into how some hospitals and health systems decreased costs after transitioning to robotics. Download the e-book to learn more about the following:
- The potential financial and operational impact of robotic-assisted surgery.
- Four steps hospitals and health systems can take to help drive economic value.
- Peer-shared experiences from executive leadership.

The Secret to Safer Patients: Workforce Wellness
For many in healthcare, their work is a vocation, a calling. But at times, they get tired, overwhelmed and anxious—just like everyone else. As a result, patient safety and quality of care may suffer.
In the March/April Healthcare Executive cover story “The Secret to Safer Patients: Workforce Wellness,” we delve into how leaders can facilitate excellent patient care by prioritizing employee well-being. Experts stress there is a strong correlation between quality of care and work conditions. They say medical errors are associated primarily with organizational climate and office environment. Specifically, burned out and dissatisfied physicians are more likely to make errors and deliver suboptimal patient care.
However, work conditions, organizational climate and office environment are not immutable, and leaders can improve them. All it takes is a commitment to systemic change—and creative ideas with which to make it happen.
