Study Reveals Impact of Payment Audits on Payer-Provider Relationships

The high volume of medical requests, prevalence of technical denials and the high administrative costs of audit compliance are the primary factors affecting payer-provider relationships in payment integrity programs, according to a new study. Change Healthcare, an ACHE Premier Corporate Partner, commissioned Frost & Sullivan to conduct a national research study to explore provider opinion about traditional and nontraditional tactics used to operate payment integrity programs. Examples of traditional tactics include diagnosis-related group audits and post-pay review, while presubmission review is an example of a nontraditional tactic. The study also uncovers a strong provider preference for presubmission notification over post-pay DRG audits. Go here to read the report and learn more.

Managing Healthcare in Complex Times

A high-yield approach to leadership development should not only include nurturing existing talent for bigger roles, but also recruiting new leaders who will prioritize talent advancement, writes Michelle Johnson in this column.

A principal at WittKieffer, Johnson is one author among the robust editorial lineup in the March/April issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management.

In his column about financial challenges, Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, CEO of Hackensack (N.J.) Meridian Health, proposes changing the narrative in providing behavioral care. In addition to the moral reasons for doing so, he cites financial imperatives, too.

Kenneth J. Cochran, DSc, RN, FACHE, president and CEO of Opelousas General Health System, discusses in this issue’s Q&A how rural community providers face the same industry headwinds that large providers face, but with their own particular challenges of poverty in remote settings.

Research topics include organizational culture and leadership in a health system merger, increasing hospice use and decreasing hospital mortality and international medical tourism.

The Journal of Healthcare Management continues to mark its 65th year of thought leadership and original research with the March/April issue, which is available online to all ACHE members. This and past issues are available at ache.org/Journals.
