Diverse Mid-Careerists Can Still Apply to New Career Development Program

Mid-careerists from racially, ethnically and LGBTQ-diverse backgrounds now have until May 21 to apply to the inaugural Thomas C. Dolan Career Accelerator Program. This exciting, new ACHE career development program seeks to expand the reach of ACHE’s premier Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program by empowering mid-level careerists to advance to higher leadership roles. Since 2014, the Executive Diversity Program has helped to prepare senior-level healthcare careerists from underrepresented groups to ascend to and advance in the C-suites of hospitals, health systems and other healthcare organizations. With the addition of the Career Accelerator Program in 2021, diverse executives with at least five years of management experience can still access the Dolan program’s high-quality education and professional development experience with the ability to personalize their participation in the six-month program.

To apply to the 2021 Dolan Career Accelerator Program, review the application requirements here, and complete the application for submission here by the extended May 21 deadline. To learn more about the Dolan Executive Diversity and Career Accelerator Programs, both of which are wholly supported by the Fund for Healthcare Leadership, visit ache.org/ExecutiveDiversityProgram.

Cultivating Partnerships to Drive Value and Transform Health

“The shift in focus from healthcare to health requires an ecosystem perspective, with leaders who see themselves as influencers in the communities in which they serve—where their role is, at a minimum, to bring other sectors together to affect overall health and wellness.” This excerpt from Chapter 1 of From Competition to Collaboration: How Leaders Cultivate Partnerships to Drive Value and Transform Health is one of many key takeaways. Published by Health Administration Press, this book is focused on how to navigate success with a change in mindset and leadership, according to authors Tracy L. Duberman PhD, FACHE, and Robert H. Sachs, PhD.

In subsequent chapters, Duberman and Sachs address the challenges of cultivating relationships in the community, with help from leaders who are doing this work with great success. Using the health ecosystem leadership model, or HELM, the authors provide a roadmap for developing new leadership competencies. Celebrating Innovation and Collaboration During National Hospital Week

The American Hospital Association’s National Hospital Week (May 9–15) offers the healthcare community an opportunity to highlight its hospitals, health systems and healthcare workers, and the innovative ways they have supported the needs of their community members, especially during this pandemic. One example highlighted by Dennis W. Pullin, FACHE, president/CEO, Virtua Health, Marlton, N.J., in the 2020 November/December issue of Healthcare Executive, was the shift in perception among healthcare organizations and their local counterparts from competitor to colleague. In a trying time, these organizations came together to provide the best possible care to their communities. In honor of National Hospital Week, the ACHE Blog recently shared an excerpt from Pullin’s column to show how this shift in perspective affected Virtua Health, its local competitors and the communities they serve.

ACHE joins the AHA in offering our heartfelt thanks to all those working in America’s hospitals and health systems, especially for their lifesaving efforts during this past year.
