Warner Thomas: The Most Important Job You Have as a Leader
“Good culture starts with clear intent—and that starts with focus and commitment from leaders,” writes Warner Thomas, FACHE, president/CEO, Sutter Health, Sacramento, Calif., in a recent ACHE Blog post. “Culture is the backbone of any successful organization.”
Thomas shares the steps Sutter Health took to improve its culture since becoming president/CEO more than a year ago. “Our focus on culture is already yielding results,” says Thomas. “Employee, physician and clinician engagement scores have shown significant improvement, with engagement among medical group physicians up 31%. Members have been using ACHE’s Resume Kit for years, and now they will find it even more helpful with easily digestible content that enhances the user experience.
Many professionals make the mistake of structuring their resume as an overview of their entire career. However, a resume is a strategic document designed to demonstrate how a candidate’s background, skills and achievements align with the specific needs and value expectations of potential employers.

There’s Still Time to Transform Your Career
Experience a unique networking and education opportunity with ACHE’s Executive Program, an immersive learning experience for healthcare leaders who are intentional about their career growth.
The three-city, six-month program begins June 9 in Houston, with stops in Chicago Aug. 25–27 and then finishing off in Atlanta Oct. 20–22.
Jose Ponce Vega, DBA, FACHE, division administrator, Cardiovascular Medicine, The Ohio State University, recently participated in the program, saying he had done multiple leadership development sessions over the years, but none have been as valuable as ACHE’s Executive Program.
“The experience collaborating with others was invaluable, and the in-person meetings sealed the bonds and relationships created over the six months,” he said.

The Foundation of Moving to Value-Based Care
Now is the time to move toward a population health approach to care, one that prioritizes quality, outcomes and affordability, according to the author of Caring for Our Communities.
In Caring for Our Communities: A Blueprint for Better Outcomes in Population Health, Mark Angelo shares his expertise as a senior administrator of a large accountable care organization and a leader in population health and palliative medicine. He provides tactical guidance for developing effective population health programs, and he answers many questions about value-based care models.
Topics covered include the following:
- The elements of value-based, population health-driven care.
- Why health equity must be the focus of any successful value-based care approach.
- What the “payvider” model is and how it breaks down the silos between payers and providers.
