Leadership Spotlight:

Cultivating Cultures of Safety in Today’s Workplace

Recent news reports and studies indicate that impolite behavior and violence from patients is on the rise in hospitals across the country. For example, a recent study in JAMA Network Open found nearly 24% of physicians have experienced workplace mistreatment in the past year, including verbal mistreatment or abuse. Other research published in the journals BMJ Quality & Safety and Pediatrics has found exposure to such behavior is linked to lower performance among clinicians.

Each June, the National Safety Council observes National Safety Month as an annual initiative to help keep workers safe “from the workplace to anyplace.” ACHE believes healthcare executives have a professional responsibility to treat and take steps to mitigate violence and to advocate for cultures of safety. In observance of National Safety Month, we encourage everyone in healthcare to become familiar with or revisit the following resources:

  • Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety: This resource draws from evidence-based practices, widely known and effective interventions, exemplar case examples and newer inventions. The plan, which includes recommendations for workforce safety, is the work of 27 federal agencies, safety organizations, experts, and patient and family advocates, including ACHE.
  • Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success: This resource helps leaders break down priorities and focus on fine-tuning a few pillars of change at a time to achieve zero avoidable harm to patients, families and the workforce. ACHE and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute collaborated with leaders of progressive healthcare organizations and globally renowned experts in leadership, safety and culture to develop this resource.

Healthcare leaders can commit to leading for safety by signing our We Lead for Safety pledge and assessing their organization’s safety culture through this self-assessment. These resources and tools are all available on ache.org/Safety, where you will find additional information and thought leadership on advancing safety.

In addition, be sure to read a recent ACHE Blog post “Just Culture: A Safety Imperative.” “We cannot move forward if fear is dictating our environment,” writes Anthony A. “Tony” Armada, FACHE, executive vice president and chief transformation officer, Generations Healthcare Network, Lincolnwood, Ill., and Chair of ACHE.
