Honoring Veterans: A Commitment Beyond Service

David Isaacks, FACHE, may be known as the network executive director of the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network, but he also was a United States Marine, serving eight years on active duty and following in the footsteps of his father. “After my time in the Marine Corps ended, I learned I was eligible for VA healthcare because of my service,” he writes in an ACHE Blog post. “I didn’t fully understand the significance of this benefit.”

Access to timely, high-quality and safe healthcare is the standard for every veteran, and VA healthcare is built on the principle of lifelong relationships with veterans, focusing on prevention through regular care and early intervention. Read Isaacks’ thoughts on proactive care and reflections on the deep personal significance of military service in “Honoring Veterans Through Lifelong Care.”

3 CEOs Discuss Their Vision

Making tough decisions is easier within the context of a clear vision, one that is simple and meaningful. “Every word in our mission statement has meaning, has intent and principles behind it that guide our broader decisions and goals,” says Robert Vissers, MD, CEO, Boulder (Colo.) Community Health.

In Healthcare Executive’s November/December issue, Vissers and two other CEOs describe their experiences refining and executing a strong vision—from the regional health system, university medical center and independent points of view. They stress that being visible within the organization and listening to other perspectives help encourage support and understanding.

“My goal is to make sure the majority of colleagues and physicians are engaged with the organization,” excited about coming to work and connecting with the mission, says Stonish Pierce, FACHE, who leads Trinity Health (Athens) Georgia.

Keeping a long-term vision at the forefront not only paves the way for clearer decision-making but also strengthens connections—both inside and outside of the organization.

Eliminating an unprofitable area might seem easy from an operational perspective, but when evaluated through the lens of the vision, executives can realize the negative impact a decision could have on employees and the community.

Complex work isn’t done by one person, says Kathy Parrinello, FACHE, who leads Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital, Rochester, N.Y. A leader helps “people articulate, communicate and appreciate each other’s expertise and how we work together. That is the best way to succeed.”

Monthly Membership Perk:

Successful Payer Negotiations Translate to Improved Patient Outcomes

Successful health system executives are skilled in creating strong relationships with payers and leading payer negotiations to improve patient outcomes. At the same time, attempts to lower care costs and improve outcomes can be challenging when incentives are misaligned and competing priorities are at play. A collaborative model necessitates successfully built relations between providers and payers, meaning all involved must have equal roles and make joint decisions, perform clinical integration activities and combine efforts on programs to bolster patient outcomes and quality.

In “Winning Together: Navigating Payer Partnerships for a Sustainable Financial Future,” members can learn more about payer perspective on value-based models, including the key principles, internal competencies needed and alignment strategies for successful engagement.

Ordinarily, the member rate for this webinar would be $49 from the On-Demand Recorded Library, but as this month’s Membership Perk, the recording is complimentary through December 11 and is worth 1 Qualifying Education credit. Take advantage of this benefit by entering the discount code NOVPERK2024 when you register for this session. For other or supplemental topics of interest, be sure to review the entire ACHE on-demand digital learning library.

We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.
