Scholars Selected for Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program
Six scholars have been selected for ACHE’s 2020 Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program. More than 70 outstanding executives applied for this prestigious national, yearlong program, which will help further prepare these mid- and senior-level careerists to advance to higher leadership roles. Scholars will benefit from a specialized curriculum that includes strategies for navigating challenges in career advancement and enhancing executive presence; one-on-one interaction with a specially selected mentor; and participation in formal leadership education and career assessments.
The Foundation of ACHE’s Fund for Healthcare Leadership established the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program to honor Dolan, who served as president and CEO of ACHE from 1991–2013, for his long-standing service to the profession of healthcare leadership and to further his strong commitment to achieving greater diversity among senior healthcare leaders. The Executive Diversity Program is wholly supported through the generous contributions of ACHE members to the Fund for Healthcare Leadership. Scholars will receive tuition to attend ACHE’s most notable educational offerings, including the 2020 Congress on Healthcare Leadership and 2020 Senior Executive and Executive Programs. Enhanced self-awareness, critical leadership skills and an expanded network of leaders will prepare scholars for their future roles.

ACHE/ASA MasterClass Strengthens Skills of Physician Leaders
Last month, 50 attendees gathered in Orlando, Fla., for a unique program presented by ACHE and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
Designed to equip physician leaders and those aspiring to executive-level positions with the leadership skills and practices needed to communicate and negotiate effectively, the ACHE/ASA Physician Masterclass included small group lectures, interactive forums and case-based strategies to positively affect organizational outcomes and improve personal performance. Course speakers included expert faculty Kevin E. O’Connor, who led a talk on “Forming and Leading a Diverse Team: Skills to Begin Tomorrow,” and Craig E. Deao, who presented on “Effective Communication That Matters.”
Overall, attendees provided positive feedback regarding the program, indicating they would implement the skills learned during the course in their own organizations. For example, some pledged to improve how they listen to and communicate with coworkers at an individual level and in teams by being more positive; preparing for how to communicate before key interactions; and telling better, more engaging stories.
