Leadership Spotlight: The Value of High Reliability in the Delivery of Care
The recent release of Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety marks the latest contribution of William Gunnar, MD, JD, FACHE, director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for Patient Safety, to a better healthcare system. In an interview with Gunnar that appears in the November/December 2020 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management, he discusses his groundbreaking work with the VA, and shares his thoughts on the value of high reliability and his contributions to the new national action plan developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, ACHE, the VA and 24 other industry-leading organizations to help healthcare providers move toward zero harm.
Other topics covered in this issue of the Journal include leadership during a national emergency, strategic planning during uncertain times and the importance of data in healthcare. The November/December issue continues JHM’s 65th year of thought leadership and original research, and is now available online to all ACHE members at ache.org/Journals.

Meeting Success in the Zoom Era
Since the start of the pandemic, healthcare leadership teams have had to change the way they meet, according to a Healthcare Executive magazine web extra. Some teams have worked virtually the entire time, some have worked via a combination of in-person and virtually, while others have continued to meet in-person but with new social distancing practices in place. While the struggle is palpable (“Zoom fatigue” is real), there are ways to overcome the challenges that come with meeting in less-than-ideal scenarios. This exclusive web extra provides some examples of how to succeed in the era of virtual meetings. Check out additional web extras, available only at HealthcareExecutive.org/WebExtras.
