Leading for Equity
Many hospitals, health systems and facilities throughout the care continuum have been working for years to promote diversity and inclusion within their ranks of senior leadership. Still, despite these efforts, recent events have highlighted the need for healthcare organizations, along with employers in other industries, to revisit their commitment to diversity and inclusion and accelerate progress in that area. The cover story of the November/December 2020 issue of Healthcare Executive explores how organizations can take their diversity and inclusion work to the next level, and how improving equitable access to healthcare in the U.S. has profound implications for patient outcomes and population health. Visit HealthcareExecutive.org to read more of the new issue of ACHE’s official magazine.

October Member Gift: Focus on Workplace Equity
Diversity and inclusion in the healthcare management field contributes to an improved workforce and services delivered to healthcare consumers. Despite this knowledge, there is more work to be done to foster inclusive environments that recognize the contributions and support the advancement of all, as demonstrated by the exclusive content we are offering members this month.
In a recent ACHE report published in the Journal of Healthcare Management, Leslie A. Athey and Peter A. Kimball of the ACHE research team demonstrate that, though progress has been made, gaps in hiring and promotion, compensation, and perception of an equitable workplace still exist between men and women healthcare leaders.
Across industries, formalized sponsorship programs have been effective in closing gender gaps as well as those for racial and ethnic minorities. Diane L. Dixon, EdD, examines the importance of this advancement practice in this chapter from her 2020 book from Health Administration Press, Diversity on the Executive Path: Wisdom and Insights for Navigating to the Highest Levels of Healthcare Leadership.
