Blog: Innovation Plus Implemenation Equals Transformation
In late 2017, NorthShore University HealthSystem developed a bold, three-year vision and plan, which included converting a full-service hospital into Illinois’ first dedicated orthopaedic and spine hospital, and implementing an advanced and innovative clinical care model across the system.
While execution was one of the health system’s historical strengths, the executive team recognized that the pace, degree of complexity, and cross-functional nature of these and future transformational strategies would require a heightened level of execution, skill and coordination. Thus, an early partnership with Integrated Project Management Company Inc., a business consulting firm focused on helping companies execute their strategies, helped establish the NorthShore Transformation Management Office. Its objective: to drive and coordinate implementation of the transformational portfolio while embedding critical new skills and supporting enhanced ownership and accountability throughout the organization.
In a recent ACHE Blog post, Beth Cutler, system lead, Transformation Management Office, NorthShore Edward-Elmhurst Health; Kristen Murtos, chief innovation & transformation officer, NorthShore Edward-Elmhurst Health; and C. Richard Panico, president/CEO, Integrated Project Management Company Inc., share how NorthShore’s Transformation Management Office successfully led the organization’s transformational initiatives.

CMS Requesting Public Input on Its Programs by Nov. 4
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a reminder Oct. 27 that it is seeking public input to help shape efforts to promote efficiency, reduce burden and advance equity within its programs. CMS is seeking public input because it wants to:
- Understand your experience, including factors that affect provider wellness.
- Learn about strategies that successfully address drivers of health inequities.
- Assess the impact of waivers and flexibilities provided in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
CMS encourages comments from all interested individuals and institutions, in particular:
- Individuals serving and located in underserved communities.
- All CMS stakeholders serving populations facing disparities in health and healthcare.
CMS released its original request for information Sept. 6, in which it stated “The Make Your Voice Heard: Promoting Efficiency and Equity Within CMS Programs RFI furthers CMS’ commitment to engaging and learning from partners, communities, and individuals across the health system to inform how we can better support the populations we serve.”
Comments must be received by Nov. 4 to be considered. For more information about the request for information and to access the web-based public comment form, visit cms.gov/request-information-make-your-voice-heard.
Separately, CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure and her leadership team are inviting national stakeholders to join them for a Nov. 1 call. LaSure and her team will provide an update on CMS’ recent accomplishments and how the agency’s cross-cutting initiatives are advancing CMS’ Strategic Plan. The call will also provide an opportunity for stakeholders to learn more about how they can partner with the agency to help implement CMS’ Strategic Plan and key initiatives. National and local CMS stakeholders and partners can RSVP for the call here.
