Leaders Put People First in the Workplace

Building a purpose-based environment starts with hiring employees who are cultural fits, not necessarily applicants with the right skills on paper. Many workplace competencies can be taught, but instilling work ethic, compassion, humility and teamwork is much more difficult.

“Finding and fulfilling your purpose (personally and professionally) is essential to happiness,” writes Kevin Joseph, MD, FACHE, in Cracking the Healthcare Leadership Code: How Purpose, Humility, and Accessibility Can Transform Your Organization.

One of Joseph’s guiding principles in finding purpose is to break down the power gradient. He refers to hospital employees as “caregivers” and encourages them to think of patients as they would a loved one. “If you … treat them as you would your own loved one, you will always make the right decision and provide the best care.”

A purpose-based culture makes it not only easier to attract and retain talent but also achieve organizational goals, turning losses into profits and achieving top safety, satisfaction, engagement and productivity ratings. Both new and experienced leaders need to rapidly evolve their leadership philosophies to thrive in a challenging healthcare environment, and Cracking the Healthcare Leadership Code shows them the way.
